Just got my truck outta the 2nd shop trying to fix rought idle And smoke on cold start. Turns out it was #3 injector. Previous shop couldn't find anything wrong. Truck would run fine after driving a couple of blocks or if I idled it up. I don't understand why it would clear up after running a while, but it would.

Mine did the same with bad injector. When it sits fuel leaks into cylinder and has to clear out after you start.

How did you determine which injector was bad? I have exactly the same problem - smokes like the end of the world and runs rough until warmed up.

The dealer did it under warranty, took them a long time. The have a printout list of things to check as long as my arm. They go down the list till the find the problem. I knew from the forums what it was but they don't take advise from customers.lol so they had the truck a long time and ended up putting a new injector.

If you can find someone who knows diesel they can test the injectors and with the symptoms would do that first unlike dealer.

Thanks Snyyyper for posting this. I must be chopped liver or something because I asked this question several days ago and got not a single reply.

I'll most definitely have someone check the injectors for me. And thank you McIntee and Digger for the insight.

I put all new injectors in mine and it still has white smoke and runs rough until it warms up. Sometimes it gets a little miss on the highway and I'm only getting around 15mpg. Only has 125,000 miles on it. Bad blow-by to.

I'm not mechanic, but my friend, your engine is on it's way out. IMO. Exact same thing my 05 truck did and it will eventually just quite. Ran supprising well right to the last trip, when it finally crapped out. From my experience, white smoke is bad after new injectors are put in. Check injectors and make sure they are all running within specs, if they are, i'd say it's a broken ring, melted piston/scored cylinder.

Are you losing any oil through your blowby? Ever have to give it more oil in between changes.

Lots of oil out of blow-by. I ran a hose all the way to the back of the truck right inside the right rear fender to catch as much as I can. It drains into an old 1gallon oil jug. It doesn't fill it up but there's so much pressure it splatters out of the jug. Take the filler cap off with it running and it pops up a couple of inches. Bought it used. It only has 125,000 miles on it. Guess I got took!

So this will be a little shorter. I was losing a quart every 3-400 miles. Cover the undercarraige, absolutely dripping with oil out the blowby tube, and on my 5th wheel, dealership tried to tell me it was within Cryslers and cummins specifications!lol

Your engine is shot, start looking and learning, because there are a lot of different opinions out there from diesel mechanics on the same problem. A lot of ignorance out there, IMO.

Get a reman long block from a reputable machine shop/mechanics, that's all you'd get from dodge and I would get it from there.

How many miles did you put on the truck? If you just got it and would call the previous owner and ask if he notice anything. Any signs of oil on the undercarriage before you bought it? If not, it may have been going out and he didn't know it, or the dealer ship told it was fine but he didn't like "that" being normal.

Good luck, check your fuel system for evidence of water, drop your tank and make sure there is no water AT ALL in there, Otherwise your next engine won't last long.
