Resonator facts
Whats the difference between a resonator and a muffler?
I'm looking to piecing together a system on a truck with no power enhancements. Straight is just to obnoxiuos and want as deeeep of a tone as I can come up with. was thinking of a 4" in and out resonator instead of a muffler. Or am I way off track?
Thanks
John

John, I went with a straight pipe on mine then I put a 15" glass pack on. With the straight pipe I had a fairly good drone at about 1700 to 1900 rpms. After I put the glass pack on the drone was pretty much gone. It also has a nice "throaty" sound that I like when it is pulling.

I wondered about glass-packs. Why don't more guys use them? I was once told they won't take the heat and that they clog. How long has yours been on?

A resonator is basically a glass pack. Maybe just bigger. They are both straight through designs. I think most aftermarket exhaust systems you can buy will have a straight through muffler.

A resonator basically just dampens the exhaust pulses by allowing them to expand into padded openings in the pipe.
I remember hacking them off the big block cars of years ago and just replacing them with straignt pipe in the days when they were at the end ofthe tail pipes. Don't know why they would do that but those days are gone anyway.

I ran mine with resonator but no muffler and then straight piped.
No muffler sounded better.
Straight Piped was very loud.
I bought a straight-thru Dynomax Muffler from Summit Racing for ~$35.00 and I love the sound I get now ... much better than any of the above.

Amish,
When I removed the Muffler I had them Weld in a piece of 3" pipe.
I did the same when I removed the resonator.
Then...for the 3" Dynomax Muffler , they just cut out the pipe where the resonator use to sit and installed it.
For the record....most muffler shops do not have anything larger than 3" pipe....so, if you need anything larger you would probably have to order....

My glass pack has been on for about a year and a half. On mine I got a 3"x4" reducer/increaser and some 3" pipe. I used a band clamp on the 4" part. The part I like is now it has a real nice sound that is real "throaty" or healthy if you prefer. It really siounds good when the back window is open and you are pulling a hill with a load.

I'd have to say that the glass pack would be louder. I have never had one on a diesel, but from experience on a gasser, my vote goes to it being louder. I could be wrong though.

It's not the noise that bothers me, its the resonating you get without any open muffler or resonator. If I could just stop the resonating while I'm towing. I hope to get a 4" system some day with the Allied muffler.
