rebuild engine
I asked this question in another thread but didn't get an answer, so I start this thread so maybe someone will help Me out.
I read the sticky but I haven't found yet a tech article to rebuild an engine, I have experience on other diesel engine but not this one yet. Can someone point Me to an article that explains this? I don't have a first gen manual yet, I found one for 2nd gens only and I don't think it is the same. I have found rebuild kits on-line but do I need something else? It's not that I plan to do this but to have one of this engines I like the idea of Me being able to do repairs in it that may be necessary or a rebuild if I ever get that far on miles.
If the kit on the link is not enough could someone send Me in the right direction with another kit?
Thank You.

I would rather run used Cummins parts than that stuff. If you have a blown motor, tear it down, find what's bad, and replace it with Cummins parts.
For a manual, go to the Cummins PowerStore on their website, they have rebuild manuals there.

I've seen some of the aftermarket pistons and such, they look good, but I don't know how they'll stand up. Friend of ours is rebuilding a 4BT with a set he got from us, I recommended he goto cummins, but he cheaped out . We'll see how it holds up.

I think the reason there is no info in the sticky about engine rebuilding (aside from head gaskets and fuel system work) is that the need is so rare- I had one last year that I sold with well over 350K and still topping 20mpg. Several hundred, if not thousands, have gone to a million without a rebuild. REst of the Dodge truck is another story.....

Got an aquaintance who has a 97 12v, he just cracked the head and the turbo is shot, been grinding into the housing.
He runs a tractor dealership and hauls large tractors and equip with the truck regularly.
Theygot eh head pulled and at 225K the cross-hatching is still clear and clean in the cylinders and the pistons look new..
I have read multiple posts here that let me know this isnt odd or unusual.. that is why they dont need rebuilt!
( im trying to talk him inot updating the turbo and a few other 'tweaks" since he's got it apart)..

Does this mean I rather get Me a core engine with average miles and just fix what is wrong? I guess I'm not used to this since that is not the case with other diesel engines but if cummins are that good I'm glad I chosen this engines for the swap.
Thank You.

Well, best case is to get a runner (and just run it), but if you're willing to do the work there's nothing wrong with buying a core so long as the block doesn't have a rod sticking out of it.

That is My fear, I found one that could be a good core but could be what You're saying to. Anyway it's good to know it wont need a rebuild in a long time bc that is exactly what I want.
