no oil pressure

Last night the oil pressure was just fine as I pulled into the driveway.
Today I started the truck up the same as always but no oil pressure.

The gage goes from below 0 before startup to 0 at key on.

I checked codes and got a 522 and 602. One of them is low oil circuit I think.

All else seems to be ok. there is oil in fact I changed it about 2 months ago.

It's about 25 deg F today but it has been down to 10 deg a couple days ago and the gage still seemed ok then.

I can get an oil pressure gage but I need to drive to get there.

Do you think it is ok to drive it??

It's run a good 5-6 minutes already and it isn't knocking or making noise.

I bet it's the sending unit. I would drive it until the weather warmed up.

More than likely it is the sending unit, but if your filter housing is the same as mine it is easy to check. There is a tapped unused port on the top that you can thread a mechanical gauge to. If you don't have a gauge you can also thread a warning light switch into it. With the engine off you will have continuity between the poles, if there is pressure with the engine running there will be no continuity.

p0522 is: engine oil pressure sensor/switch circuit low input.... the code that you don't want to see is p0524, that means oil pressure is too low
i would say your sending unit is bad

Thanks for the help guys. I tapped on the sending unit but that didn't help. I finally decided to drive to work anyway.

About 4-5 miles down the road the gage came alive and danced around between 40 and 100 before settling at about 70 (my guess). It was about nornal the rest of the 20 miles to work. It did the same thing on the way home so it is the sending unit. Friday I'll install a mechanical gage I have from the streetrod. As wannadiesel says, I'll wait untill warmer weather to change the sender out.

Thanks again.
