Making an Exhaust brake "Cackle"

I recently was passed on a down grade by a cummins running a Wastegated Exhasut brake that had a mild cackle to it on the down hill. When i say cackle, i am refering to the sound similar to that of a big truck Compression brake.

I followed the guy and got to talk to him at a gas sation just out of curiosities sake. He said he had a D-celerator with the built in WG, but that his "diesel shop had modified the Wastegate either on the turbo or" (I'm Assuming that it's the one) "on the Exhaust brake to Dump pressure externally". giving it an aggressive flutter or cackle, while compressioning under load that actually sounds really good coming off of a hill.

Any thoughts or experiences. Neat concept. Worked for him of course not as aggressive or loud as a true compression Jake brake but definately had the vocal apperance of one.

He must have an external wastegate, so the exhaust is getting dumped out the wastegate and not going out the tailpipe. That's gotta be really sooty under the hood.

I have the same brake on my truck and yes it does have a wastegate built into the brake. Mine does cackle going doing a long hill..and I have not figured out why it makes that sound. But also my truck cackles or flutters anyway with the 16cm housing I have on it. This housing has been close to a die grinder and has been relieved of some rough internal edges.
I took my buddy that owns a 1999 Peterbilt for a ride and he laughs and says that my truck sounds like his big truck.
I am really impressed with the way this brake works and how it holds. Our last trip to the coast was the trip that made me a true believer. At the top of a 6% grade I slowed down enough to go into 3rd. On the way down the hill I was @ 40mph with 28lbs of back pressure. Since this hill has 3 lanes going down I took the truck lane and stayed there. My truck still has the 30lb exhaust springs so the wastegate on the brake is the 30lb'r.. Once the heavier springs are installed I will change the wastegate diaphram to the 60lb'r....
I waited 2 years to get this brake and I am glad I did...

Makes sense a WG on the Exhaust brake dumping pressure, normal butterfly elbow brakes have holes in the valve to it sounds like a choked exhaust whistle. Interesting Does it do it even when its muffled, i wonder if they routed the WGed gasses around the muffler and then dumped it into the exhaust, that would make it louder but sure seems like a lot of work for noise.

Rick thanks for the PM

Don't know if it's true but I've been told Cummins does make a true compression brake for the 5.9 but on a Dodge you wouldn't be able to close the hood, the engine is taller.

Where can I find one of these compression brakes? I'll buy one today, and buy a cowl hood to go with it tomorrow! I don't care how much a brake is, I would rather have that than an exhaust brake.

Thanks,
Chris

OH, and BTW, I know that they are hard to find, any ideas on where I should look to find one, or someone who would know for SURE if they are made?

There is no such animal. It's difficult to make a compression brake for an engine that doesn't run the injectors off the cam. In an engine with a compression brake, the injector lobe of the cam is used to open the exhaust valve when the brake is activated. That's why we have exhaust brakes instead.

Darnit, I knew that Jacobs didn't make one, as I have called them about it, but I was hoping infidel was right, as he is alot.

Oh well, US Gear Exhaust brake will have to work.

Thanks Anyway,
Chris

PS, Can someone design one for these trucks, I don't have the knowledge or the tools, but some other people have designed and built a lot less practical things for these trucks

I have also heard that you wont find a compression brake on engines smaller than 10 or so liters.
