i am getting low readings on my fuel pressure guage so i decided to change the filter it is black with white spots but fuel looks clean i can see the botton of the housing clearly. my question is can i run the truck just say around the block to see if pressure is ok without filter i want to know if this is the problem. i m going to buy a new filter tommorow but didnt know if i could just run truck short shot without it

thanks

No, don't even start it up without the filter. Put a new one it and go.

Why risk it? It's like asking if you can run your engine with no oil in it. The filter is a very minor restriction (probably not even measurable, could be wrong though) when it is clean. Plus they are like $15. Why risk your $1300 injection pump for a quick spin?

Yes, you certainly can run the truck with no fuel filter BUT, that would be like running it with no guts in the oil filter or air filter. Why would you do it? It only takes one minute (very small) piece of trash to get in that injector pump to turn it into expensive trash.
I bought the NAPA fuel filter the last time I changed my stock filter (which is no longer there) and it seemed to flow a little better. The stock filter does seem to have small ports in it to me anyway.

I can tell by the replies, that nobody has really tried this. Unless, the '00+ trucks are different,, the '98.5 style fuel filter housing/filter will not let you even pressure the system without a HUGE fuel leak.

I tried it,, when my VP44 was going out, the dealer kept saying my fuel filter was the problem,, so, I said, IT'S NOT THE PROBLEM, and pulled my fuel filter out, put the canister back on, and bumped the starter. Fuel started pouring out around the top of the canister. No fuel pressure, and my gauge saw about 1PSI or so, and the frame rail of my truck, and the drieveway saw about a gallon of fuel.

Sure,, you can try, but, it won't seal. Be warned, there is alot of trash in the fuel lines, and it wil all be run through the VP44,, if not pumped into the injectors, then pumped through the injecton pump, and returned to the tank.
