Blown head gasket (with pics)

All cleaned up, bores look good, no scoring, no melted pistons. Still looking at crosshatch at 268,000 miles.

Blown in 3 spots on the passenger side into the water jacket. I did manage to seal it up last year and keep going with it. Like twice out to Fall Brawl and Spring Fling out in Dillsburg, PA, towed out with it and trailered it back, numerous sled pulls, hauling, daily driving.

Close up of the mess.

The studs I have are a newer set of ARP's. The rocker arm stud is shorter now and requires you to modify the rocker arm, so you don't have to butcher the valve covers. I had to mill a notch, .200" deep x 1.100". Powdered metal, fun stuff to mill, kinda tough, wish I had carbide endmills, would have gone alot faster.

Next I have to clean out and tap the holes deeper and make sure the stud for the rocker arm is a certain distance off the deck.

I also have an oil leak behind the timing case that I want to fix while its apart, plus I want to jump the pump timing a tooth. So many things to do, not enough time to do them all. Has to be back together so I can take it out to PA for Fall Brawl.

Not sure on the weight, but I will put it on the feed scale when I get a chance, I can pick it up and carry it off a bench, but picking or putting it on the floor is a little difficult.
I use an engine hoist to pick it out of there, I use a short chain and get the hook as close to the head as I can, did my 24valve 3 times, so I'm well practiced. Started at 6:45 and the head was on the bench at 8:00.

I know wanna helped pred do the head on his and he picked it off by himself, he didn't have an engine hoist so he used what he had, himself.
Work smarter, not harder. At least thats the idea.

An ebay auction claimed one to weigh 135lbs. Not sure if thats true or not.

Sounds like I may have to let the machine shop I choose do the mill work when they o-ring the head, cause I dont have that kind of equip.

I have been told 150lbs, and I think it is accurate, as it feels almost as heavy as a 190# Getrag. I did my first one with a front end loader and a chain Removed hood, naturally). Second one was by hand. I was sweating by the time I got it off and into my buddy's p/u bed, and we had a high of 25 for that day. Took me a litlte longer. Head needed milled, and I put in a .020" thicker gasket.

Let's clarify that - Pred pulled the head by himself, not me. I am a weak puny girly man by comparison.

Ok, just had heard stories liek Dan's, using a lift to remove them, made me think they weighed some gawd-awful amount...

Now, when pulling the pushrods and head, do you need to pull the lifters as well ( i was told to always pull them on a gasser so they can be lubed and oiled before reinstalling the rods)? what type lifters do these engines use

I'm pretty sure the lifters stay in place--they are solid, not haydraulic.

You can't pull the lifters out from the top, they are a mushroom style and can only be removed after the cam is removed through the side cover.

For those interested in the weight. According to my Fairbanks Morris scale a bare head with valves weighs 124lbs. I think 150lbs with an exhaust manifold and all the sensors and intake on is pretty close.

As of right now the head is on and torqued down to 75ft lbs. Studs went in easy, not a real exciting job, so I did not take pictures of it. Checked the valve covers for fit and they do not need to be butchered. I'll have it running tonight, get a heat cycle on it and retorque it.

I examined the head gasket again a little closer and #4 was blown to the outside, there was carbon on the gasket surface that the head does not sit on.
