Painting tailgate, raised letter stensil??
Im getting ready to finally finish my tailgate and wondering if any of you guys know if a stensil is available to apply to the raised letters to be able to two tone it without the tedious task of masking it all off... I want the letters to be black and the rest red.. think it will look cool.. Here is a pic of the tailgate..

DNR somebody makes what your talking about. I was at a body shop in Houston last summer and the guys there had a set for several different vehicles and models. They were magnetic and fit over the letters and kinda sloped down the sides of the letter to let the paint go down on the edge of the letter about half way down. Check with some of the larger body shops they might loan you some or put you in touch with the manufactor. Good luck.

I like the sticker idea kinda... Seems like a cost effective way to do the deal... Maybe even apply the sticker then clear over it... Might be kinda hard to line it up though... thanks for the ideas guys

If you wet the tailgate down you will be able to move the decals around and get the air bubbles out. I use soapy water but not sure how the soap would effect the clear coat if you did not get it all removed. When it dries the decals are there for good.

I think that flat black would look cool if you sanded the red off like someone suggested. You could leave the edges kinda rough, and it would kinda cool and different. I would try it. Worst case scenario, you repaint it.

Thanks to "Freight train" for telling me about the decals.. They went on nice and I think it turned out sweet.. What we did was sprayed the tailgate red, applied one coat of clear, then lightly wet sanded.. Then applied the decals, wiped clean.. Then applied 3 more coats of clear.. Wet sanded/wheeled it out and bam!!
I want to get new tail lights with the black trim, I think that would look cool, kinda set it off, also hopefully in the next month I will have the cash to get the box line x'ed.. Gonna have them go over the rail, so that should look good too..

That part is done!! I don't think it will ever be finished, they never are!!
I'm just glad I don't have to buy any more paint supplies, that stuff is so expensive.. I have over 2k just in materials, and it was all at a good discount too... then I had to build a guy a retainer wall around the front of his house that took a week to do, that was for using his shop, paying my buddy who works for him to wet sand/wheel it all pretty.. Crazy, glad it's done... "KINDA"
