9/16 Front Wheel Studs on a D250

So after searching the threads here I was stoked to find a part number for new 9/16" wheels studs. But after further research, and actually pulling on of my studs, I've found the D models have different front studs. I'm finally getting my Ford Alcoas put on, and I'd really like to upgrade to the 9/16" studs. Does anyone know of a solution for this?

Here's the detailed info:

The original

The part number suggested here was either Dorman 610-282 or Balkamp 6411295, it looks like this:

With these specs:
Wheel Bolt Knurl Dia. : .655"
Wheel Bolt Overall Length : 2 3/32"
Wheel Bolt Thread Size : 9/16"-18

I was stoked that the part number was so easy to come by, and after some further poking around the Dorman site I came up with Dorman 910-383 or Balkamp 6411596 that I liked better since it has the auto centering nub out front:

With these specs:
Wheel Bolt Knurl Dia. : .643"
Wheel Bolt Overall Length : 3 5/32"
Wheel Bolt Shoulder Length : 1"
Wheel Bolt Thread Size : 9/16"-18
Wheel Bolt Shoulder Length : 27/32"

Then I found out that the front wheel studs on the D models are actually Dorman 610-286 or Balkamp 6413114:

With these specs:
Wheel Bolt Knurl Dia. : .723"
Wheel Bolt Overall Length : 2 3/16"
Wheel Bolt Shoulder Length : 1 3/16"
Wheel Bolt Thread Size : 1/2"-20

So obviously the knurl diameter is quite a lot larger than the others. After more poking around I came up with Droman 610-303 or Balkamp 6412181:

With these specs:
Wheel Bolt Knurl Dia. : .677"
Wheel Bolt Overall Length : 3 9/32"
Wheel Bolt Shoulder Length : 15/16"
Wheel Bolt Thread Size : 9/16-18

I thought there was some chance this one may work. I got one last night, but it's just about 2 hairs too small. Part of the issue is that on the original you can see that the diameter right up next to the head is larger than the diameter further down. This corresponds to a larger diameter hole on the brake rotor than the hole in the hub (the rotor sits behind the hub and the stud sort of holds it all together). Would I be inviting danger is I were to use 2 of the original studs (opposite each other) in order to center the rotor on the hub and to center the wheel on the hub, then use the above studs with a couple of tack welds on the back to hold it in when the lug nut isn't installed?

The only other option I can come up with is Dorman 610-198 or Balkamp 6413140:

With these specs:
Wheel Bolt Knurl Dia. : .722"
Wheel Bolt Overall Length : 2 9/32"
Wheel Bolt Shoulder Length : 1 3/16"
Wheel Bolt Thread Size : 5/8"-18

It's an exact match to the original, even a little longer, which is good, except that it's a 5/8" stud. I haven't checked to see if the Alcoas will allow a 5/8" stud, but I did try and find a 60* seat lug nut that was 5/8" and came up with nothing. I'm also wanting to use the Alcoa lug nuts and the Alcoes screw-on lug nut caps.

So am I just SOL?

I guess another question running through my mind is if anyone that has changed to the Alcoas, and not changed their wheel studs, has had the tire shops give them a hard time about not wanting to install them since there's not a lot of thread contact with the short 1/2" studs?

In a word, yes.

I went through all the same you have in a search for wheel studs... Found the same outcome as you for the D250.

In the end, I just replaced all the studs with new stock and was done with it.

No one ever gave me a hard time about the studs on the alcoas.

I did want to get new studs for the 19.5 Aluminum Rickson wheels on my D250. I ended up using the "shanked bulge" style lug nut. It has a shank like the older style mag wheels, to go inside and grab more threads with the tapered top to seat the wheel.

Look at the top center lug nut on this page:

Pape, thanks for this. I did think about those style nuts. But I like the recommended Alcoa style better. Guess I'll just keep the 1/2" studs. Maybe change out the rears next time I do brakes back there. I spent quite a little time trying to find another manufacturer of studs, but only ever found Dorman in the auto/light truck studs. Found several manufacturers for large wheel studs for heavy trucks and what not. I haven't gone to Napa and looked through there picture books, but I suspect in the end I'd find the same result since I suspect that Dorman supplies their studs as well.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't waste your time - I've already done that for you. I went to napa and oreilly's and vatozone, and had all of them look through their catalogs. Eventually I was sent to the heavy truck wheel and brake shop here in west sacramento and they pulled out the same catalog that the napa guys were using - DORMAN. I was comfortable with the gorilla shanked bulge lug on the ricksons but used the standard lugs with the ford alcoas.

Don't know about the 2WD, but it was a piece of cake for my W-350. I bought new hubs and rotors that already had 9/16" studs. They said for a '80's Chevy 4x4, then found the right 9/16" studs at CarQuest to change out the ones in my D70 axles. ARE wheels fit with no problem, using long 9/16" taper lug nuts.

About the Chevy hubs with the 9/16" studs, could you buy the exact size 9/16" studs and put them in a factory Dodge W350 hub (thus replacing the 5/8" studs)?? Have a part # for the 9/16" Chevy studs?

I don't know if ramw350 is still looking into this right now, but I found this thread on a search. I am trying to replace the 5/8 studs on a dually cab and chassis d70. My research shows that the knurl on the wheel stud in my axle is .655. and the shank length is 1 inch. I found that the Dorman 610-282 has the same knurl and the shank is (i think) 27/32" which is very close to 1". I could find no half inch studs with the .655 knurl so I am planning to go with these for my rears.

Never had problems with shops but they have only fixed one tire for me and put that on. I always make sure they have no problems with anything before it goes in the door. 6 full turns hand tight on the oem 1/2inch studs. I used the alcoa lug nuts from southwestwheel but was told it's a gm nut. This ford I have has nice 9/16 studs stock. I'm going to look into those and put alcoas on everything.

Hey Trooperthorn, thanks for the reply and answer to a question I had awhile back. Took a good bit of time to get an answer, but patience is a virtue. Main reason why I was asking was I picked up a set of 6 19.5" chevy dually wheels from a stepvan that are 8x6.5 bolt pattern like our stock 16" wheels are. As far as that's concerned they will bolt right up, but first I have to get the center hub hole machined out to the larger diameter hub of the Dana 80 I swapped in over the summer. Plus reason I posted here is the front axle wheels studs need changed from the factory 5/8 to 9/16 to match the now swapped in Dana 80 dually rear that guess what has 9/16 studs and lugnuts (unlike the 1ST GENs had). That way I don't have to only get 2 dually wheels bored out for each lug stud hole to match the stock 93's front hubs. Changing them out to 9/16 will make life a lot easier and allow me to rotate all 6 to any wheel position and just have the center hub hole machined in all the wheels then I take them to the machine shop. Now on the Dorman 610-282 wheels studs can I use these on the front axle (Dana 60) hubs without an issue and where can I buy them? Advance and AutoZone carry them? Thanks again.

Sal

As for finding them, if a good parts store does not have them they can probably get them. I found them on ebay also by searching "Dorman 610-282".

As for the fit on the fronts, that I don't know, but I will check it out.

Thanks and I forgot to ask will 1 ton dually lugnuts from a 2ND GEN work on these wheels studs? I'm sure the thread size/spec is the same, but was wondering.
