92 Cummins Turbo barking under pressure
Hello, I have a 1992 Dodge Cummins Diesel with a 4" straight through exhaust and a K&N air cleaner. I notice when I get it shifted up to 5th gear and have a load on the truck pulling a hill, the turbo makes like a barking sound under a load. Everything else is normal at all times except for when the motor gets to that certain point when I'm pulling a trailer up a hill. Is that normal or is something wrong. The pump was turned up some before I got it. Everything else is stock. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the turbo is surging. Does it still have the stock turbine housing on it? The H1C turbos often surge under load with smaller housings.
A compressor kit from HTT or a used HX-35 off a 2nd gen truck will cure the surging. If you don't fix it the turbo shaft will snap eventually.

Yep, just like he said, mine was doing that when pulling my trailer and I went to the HTT Stage III compressor upgrade and cured it. It is boost pressure backing out of the intake trying to reverse the turbo blades and eventually it will break the shaft. Besides the HTT upgrade makes an awesome turbo scream.

One more ? I went to HTT's website and was wondering if I need the Stage III or the Stage II. I don't plan on modifing my truck any more and with the few mods I have done to it now, I was wondering if I need the Stage III.

Get the Stage III. Price is the same, it won't spool noticeably slower and it will flow more air.
