That said, who wants to give me the lowdown on 3rd gen rims?

How many different varieties are out there? I know I've seen the ones that look like they have chrome just stuck to them. I've seen the basic work truck rims. Is there a polished version (kinda like the 2nd gen alloys)? Any magic years to watch out for?

I'd been thinking about going to a set of 3rd gen, maybe this is my sign. Going to look around for a single replacement for mine first, but if I can't find anything for a decent price, I'll go 3rd gen. No way I'm paying $200+ for a new factory rim when I can find a full set of 3rd gen rims out there for not much more than that.

Let me know if you need a set. I have my stockers chrome clad wheels sitting in the garage. I'll part with them. And Giddings is only 15 min from my house. PM if you need to man!

Think Mike and Eli covered it.
Crome clad....what Brian (and Max) has... least expensive on used market.
Powder coated (or painted) grey Aluminums... like Mike has.
Polished Aluminum... like my racing wheels, you saw at Redline......

They are low maintenance... coated so don't need polishing. I just wash mine.
I watched the classifieds for 6 months and the going rate seems to be $300.00 w/ caps. for the grays or polished. $200-250.00 for the crome clad.
Any set from 04 - 08 will be the same choices.

Not to far from Gidings, maybe an hrs drive?

Also a set with tires (285's) about an hours drive north of Tulsa.

Im in the same boat. I have another set of polished aluminum 3rd gen rims in storage plus the powdercoated black ones on my truck. And I bought some H2s and plan to put those on the truck. But im just not ready to move forward yet. After I get the H2s on, I may sell one of the other sets.

I found a couple of cheap sets ($200) of H2s in the Dallas area.

I would just need a to get a set of center caps from a 3rd gen to trim down and use.

So many possibilities. It would be better if I wasn't in such a rush.

Since I can't find anything on search, does anyone recall what the differences are between the load ratings of 3rd gen rims vs H2 rims?

Never seen either published, but also never seen anyone report being able to crack either type wheel.
Dodge factory probably stronger...no? Just based on vehicle GVW.

That's a great price on H2's... machined for dodge axle? And I think they look better w/o center caps! Just personal preference, I guess.

Yeah, one set is already cut, the other set would need machining. Both come with normal Hummer center caps. I don't think they say "Hummer" on them, so they would work till I replace them. But I'm not running any rims that say "Hummer" on the "Dodge".

Now it's time for the "tire poll". How's everyone rubber working for them?

My last three sets have been BFGs, 2 sets of All Terrains and 1 set of Mud Terrains. Thinking about switching it up. I was looking at the Nitto Terra Grapplers. Any opinions? Can't remember what anyone here is running. I think there are some Toyos and maybe some Nittos. Figuring I don't need the M/T since it doesn't see much muddy weather. I should be able to get by with a good A/T. Plus, the load ratings on the Nittos are better than the BFGs. Not sure why all the BFG ATs in 17" are rated at 3195 (unless it's a typo on their webpage).

Justin, Im running Nitto Terra Grapplers now...in the 285/75/17 size. This has become a very popular size now, at least on the 3rd gen boards. That size is a great compromise between looks/performance/price. So far im very happy with them. They are so much smoother and lighter than the old 35'' mud terrains I was previously running. They are 'E' Rated and probably came off the same assembly line as their cousins....the Toyo ATs. For some reason the Toyos....are rated heavier but also cost more. The Nitto Terra Grapplers are only rated at 3195 lbs too, but I think they would hold whatever weight the Toyos are rated for. And the same size tire in Nitto Dura Grappler (more of a highway tread) are rated at 3900+ lbs.

I paid $969 (I believe that is correct) for 4 Nitto TGs out the door, mounted, balanced, tax etc.........from Discount Tire.

I just switched to Pro Comp Xtreme A/T's. Very pleased with them so far.
They are more agressive than the BFG's and seem to have better wet traction. They are more quiet on the hwy and also clear better in mud.
Also, on sale this month .... http://www.procomptires.com/
