Same here Rowland - figured it was punishment for not frequenting DTR as much as I used to!

Thanks....good to know! Must be their server.
I'm usually not online over weekend but this past weekend...there were three times i got "try back later" messages due to, I suspect, high traffic.

Eli, I didn't know you had an ATV! I've tried in the past to see if there was any interest in getting a DTR #8 GTG/ATV Riding/RV/Camping Event....but it's never really materialized. I know Me, Rob, Justin, BrIan, and Charlie have ATVs. The others could still come and either rent/borrow one...or do their "wrenching" at the location.

Does this sound like something that could interest the group for a future meet? What's the difference if we are at an off-road riding park or at Charlie's field? You go ride a few hours, come back, kick back...have a brew or two....throw another log on the campfire...and talk about trucks/atvs. Usually the rest of the RV/ATVing public will have a few CTDs there anyway...and may come join our party. Just a thought.

I'm out for the weekend of the 3rd. I'm heading south. Plus I have to go fix my Grizzly anyway. I've been having a rash of CV boot failures....must be age since they all started letting go at once. They're not getting hit by anything, just opening up at the creases.

Plus I also have a new set of rims I'm getting my mud tires mounted on. Had one rim go bad on the old stock set I was using and I can't find a Yamaha dealer who could find a replacement in the same size. So I just got a set of black steel ITPs.

Just going to Giddings. Got a wedding, some work to do at the ranch and have to get the Grizzly up and running again.

11 hour trip, huh? Suddenly my 3.5 hours doesn't seem so bad.

So I'm just getting my butt kicked by rims and tires. First I have a bad rim on the Grizzly that needs replacement, now I find out that I've got a leaking rim on the truck. It's leaking on the inside of the rim at the weld. Dropping about 10lbs per day.

That said, who wants to give me the lowdown on 3rd gen rims?

How many different varieties are out there? I know I've seen the ones that look like they have chrome just stuck to them. I've seen the basic work truck rims. Is there a polished version (kinda like the 2nd gen alloys)? Any magic years to watch out for?

I'd been thinking about going to a set of 3rd gen, maybe this is my sign. Going to look around for a single replacement for mine first, but if I can't find anything for a decent price, I'll go 3rd gen. No way I'm paying $200+ for a new factory rim when I can find a full set of 3rd gen rims out there for not much more than that.

Robert, I actually don't have one myself yet. I have been wanting to get one for a while now but have always had better things to do with my cash lately. I've got a friend who has several and i hauled them up there. That actually sounds like a really good time, especially since it is cooling off.

I would try to find some of the 3rd gen factory alloys which are solid not steel with the chrome piece glued to it (chrome clads). The earlier 3rd gens (03-04) had more machined look if that is what you want to call it or a coating that makes them look silver which I think looks pretty good on some trucks(this is what I have look in my gallery). The later 3rd gens have the same exact wheel except they are polished which looks pretty slick as well (like Rowlands I believe). Oh and you probably already knew this but they are 17's instead of 16's.

Thanks Eli!

So yours are not the chrome clad, just the regular coated ones. Looks sharp. Might be a good choice for me since I never really polish mine up anyway (and when I do, they look out of place).

Been doing a little Craigslist searching to see what I can come up with. Also considered some H2s, if I can find them.

Justin, the 2 kinds of 3rd Gen wheels you'd want are the forged satin alloys with silver center caps or the forged polished alloys with chrome center caps... FYI you can get strong, good-looking aftermarket 17" alloys new for ~ $450 on sale.

During the '05 model year, Dodge offered both as options (I chose the satin because it was cheaper).

No mine are not chrome clad they are the forged satin ones that Mike is talking about, I just couldn't remember what they called it. To me I would hold out if you can for some 3rd gens, I'm not a fan of the H2's IMHO.

Thanks guys. I'll have to keep searching Craigslist to see what I can come up with.

So far I've found a set of H2s already cut for $200 and a full set of 16" alloy replacements (like mine) for $200. No single rim yet. And all the 3rd gens I've found so far are the chrome clad '04 rims.

For know, I'm just pimping the farm truck rim spare with the center cap on it. LOL
