You have got to be kidding!!!!!

Here's a post from a Tow Vehicle forum on another site.
------------------------------
The Ford 460 engine is one of the best for towing. It's been around for many years and if in good condition should run for a long time. Your are right about plugs and filters. I use Shell Rotunda Oil. I pulled with a 460 for 15 years and over 90,000 mile and had no major problems. I now have a 7.3l diesel and am happy with it. You can probably pick up a front gas tank at a auto salvage yard. If not try Transferflow. Good luck
-------------------------------

Now I'm not trying to start a war but this guy has got to be kidding!! I owned a '93 with a 460 and it sucked at towing. Oh sure, on flat land it did Ok, maybe, but it liked to overheat. Towing a pass, forget it, semi's passed me.

How 'bout you. If you owned one, did you think it was a good TV??

The old big blocks were only good to tow up to about 8K, then they really struggled. And I don't think ford ever solved the 460's cracked exhaust manifold issue.

We used 454"s and they would pull the guts out of the fords back in the late 60's and 70's, but they would also guzzle the fuel. Goodluck,,Rick

I had a 1978 F350 with a 460 and 3-speed automatic tranny. Pulled a 39' 5vr with it. Put a total of 90K miles on the truck, about 30K of that towing. Never lacked for power, but did spend time in 2nd going up passes but that was because I had 3.70 gears in the rear-end. If I had the 4.10 gears, I don't think I would have used 2nd near as much. Only got about 6mpg while towing and 11mpg empty.

I'll take my Cummins anyday of the week over that 460 though

And they would crack exhaust manifolds too. Terrible at it. They really ran warm and sucked the fuel.

My 460 got 5-6 mpg pulling the boat; 9 mpg not pulling the boat. 3 spd auto and 4.10's; but that puppy could hold the weight in the back.

And to think that some buffoon at ford thought that the answer to that was two 19 gallon tanks. I was stopping to fill up at least once a day that I drove the darn thing - and at single digit mileage I didn't drive it that often. I didn't want to leave one tank dry because I was worried about cooking the in-tank fuel pump if it was dry. Heck, my Formula got just as good (bad?) mileage as that truck did, AND, if the highway was flooded, I swear it could go faster than the truck.

I also had the warped manifold issue - but it didn't pop out the sparkplugs like the newer fords did.

Chris was one happy camper when ole' big dooley drove away to its next life pulling lawnmowing trailers and crews.

Yatta-yatta-yatta. Look at the quote, you guys will never get fat milage figures unless you use Shell Rotunda oil. You can't get big numbers without it.

Yes they would indeed and everyone thought they would be smart and go to headers and then the agony of blown header gaskets started, but hey gas was cheap back then !!! Goodluck,,Rick
