Wonder what happened, you shouldn't need trailer brakes to stop that small load, even though the manual says so. Was his girl friend with him, I bet I know what was going on.

I agree with the in-experienced driver theory.
Speed and stupidity may also have played a part, throw in a little alcohol , a cell phone, and a hot girlfriend, and you have the recipe for a crash.
I am not recommending that trailer brakes are not necessary, but I could have pulled that little bitty trailer and load to Alaska and back, safely, with no trailer brakes and slick tires.
The old gentleman in the overalls seems concerned; I bet he is wondering if the kid has sufficient cash to repair his house and yard; I would bet not.
It is a good thing that the weather was bad ; otherwise, the old gentleman and his wife would have been sitting on the porch and got squished , adding vehicular homicide to the kids record.

Ya I had my brakes go out one time on a trailer pulling 4 mules with a big steel trailer and made it home fine you just have to give yourself alot of room.

funny you say that, the guy who posted this on the other sight said the old man was real calm about it, AND HE WAS SITTING ON THE PORCH, i guess he got out of the way quick when he saw what was coming tho.

That trailer and Toy will be over 6000 lbs.....trailer brakes will be a must if there a lot of hills with that weight - either that or an exhaust brake which I doubt he had! It is easy to say "I can tow more without trailer brakes".....you can keep saying that all the way up until your brakes fade to nothing when you are coasting down a 3 mile long hill. Don't get me wrong, I have towed heavier without trailer brakes too - but it was also obvious that it wasn't the right thing to do.
As always, driver experience almost always plays a role....
On another note, is that frame as bent as it looks?!?! YIKES!!!
