Where to .... advice please

Around August I am considering taking a 3-4 week drive from Mexico to Canada. (Ontario) via the eastern seaboard and returning inland. My wife has never done any camping or RV'ing but wants to try it. I don't want to buy a new or used RV, trailer or 5th wheel as an expensive experiment to see if she likes/dislikes the experience. Here is where I need advice from you experienced campers/ RV'ers. Have looked at renting something for a month but find it is quite expensive even for a little popup. What can you suggest as a way to do this cheaply, but with some degree of comfort? I know there are stacks of places to rent a camper or a decent trailer but can anybody suggest a place in maybe southern Texas that I can go to on the way north without getting ripped off? Anybody want to rent me their unit privately? We can of course take the trip and stay at motels as usual but this time would like to try something different and hopefully cheaper. This trip will only be my wife and I. Will be taking the truck and not the car. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Moderators, not sure if this is the right place for this so please move it if necessary.

Mexstan,
I see a lot of rental RV's from RVAmerica. I couldn't tell you how much they rent for but they seem to be decent rigs.

PISTOL

Mexstan,

Altmans RV Is a reliable company which rents RVs. Try their web site. If they don't have anything for you, they know the industry and can steer you in the right direction.
MexStan:

I was in a similar situation several years ago; I'm on LI & visit my sister in Michigan; One day it dawned on me that I might like to tow a trailer so I could stop wherever I wanted & have my motel room with me.

I bought an old, fairly cheep, small trailer to haul around & see if I liked it.

I DID, I DID!! ;D ;D

Now, I'm waiting on my 3500 so some time later I can buy a new, monster trailer...well, not a monster, really; just something newer & bigger than what I have.

It was quite an eye-opening experience when I first went to look at used trailers - people were asking very high prices for wrecks! I finally found a very good, solid unit at a reasonable price, though.

Maybe this might be a good way to test if you & the misses likes the lifestyle!

Good luck!

Rene
Re:Where to .... advice please

Mexstan, What gadget said. If you do get an older, used TT, before pulling it make sure to check and repack the wheel bearings. In this part of the country you can get nice, used TTs quite inexpensively.

Remember, If you rent an RV, when you return it you have nothing but an MT bank account. If you buy a good used RV and decide that is not the way you want to go you can then resell it and get your money back. If you decide you like RVing and want something newer, bigger, etc. you can trade it in and still have something to show for the $$$ spent.

I used to have a tent trailer and found that if you stop on the side of the road or in rest areas and pop it up that is considered camping. > If you stop with a TT it is just "resting" - no prob. I was never ticketed for "camping" but was told to move on to a camp ground. Have never had a problem with the TT.

Have a safe and pleasurable trip and God go with you.

Stan

Since I'm only 500 mi. south of BC you'd have to make that a West Coast trip! I'd loan you the trailer free but you can't afford my delivery and pu fees to San Antonio. ;D ;D ;D

Well, let's see. I have one son living in Vancouver and another living in Toronto. Guess I could take an extended trip.
