Newbie needs upgrade advice, please.

Hi,

I am new to the board and I am going to pick up my 2nd DC tomorrow. I had a '97 std cab auto with just a TST plate in it but the '96 I am picking up has a 5 spd so I am ready to do some real bombing. Here are my plans so far:

1. EGT Gauge and Boost Gauge

2. TST #11 Kit (280hp/680tq). If someone thinks I can get away with a #10 for a while with the stock clutch since I do only occasional/light (under 5000 lbs) towing, please let me know.

3. Rip's 4" Exhaust or if I feel ambitious a 4" turbo pipe into 5" stacks. (Anyone have problems when water/snow gets in their slash cut stacks?)

4. 16cm2 non waste gated turbo housing (trying to keep EGT in check).

Of course more is planned but this will be the first wave of the torque invasion. How does this sound to the more experienced guys out there? I have done alot of homework and I think I have a pretty good plan laid out. I guess next mods would be a South Bend Clutch, Scotty's Intake, and 300hp injectors. What is the real story with the 5th gear probs on these trucks. I hear alot of talk about it and want to fix it before it fixes me. Thanks for any help.

John

Re:Newbie needs upgrade advice, please.

Sounds like a well laid out plan I say get the ten plate now depending on current clutch condition. I am running 370's and a 5 plate on a stock cutch with 170,000 miles. Not bad. Just now starting to slip. I occasionally haul a load of cattle hay or logs. Also talk to Rob Thomas about his stack design, he figured out a way to keep from blowing all that black sh%t on your truck during wet start up. Make sure you don't over spool that turbo with the non wastegated housing. Hope this helps.

Thanks oldred. Let me get this straight though, does the #5 plate make more power than the number #10. Also, how do you like the 370's? I hear they aren't the greatest for daily drivers. Did you switch the delivery valves?

Thanks.

John
