What kinda' TT hitch?
O.K. Sportsfans,
I've got the best brand of tow vehicle money can buy. ;D I also got the factory tow package. I'll soon be getting my travel trailer. It will be 29 feet long from nose to toes and weigh in at 10k GVW. ( I'm currently enamored of the Arctic Fox 26Z.) http://www.nashtraveltrailers.com/fo...rs/26zfox.html
What brand and model of WD and anti-sway hitch should I get? What's the good, bad, and ugly on these puppies? ???
Thanks In Advance,
100 Proof

Re:What kinda' TT hitch?
My TT is 35'3 and weighs in at 9500 loaded.
I choose the Reese/Drawtite Dual Cam HP Sway Control with 1200# bars. My tongue weight is about 12-1300#, but when I distribute the weight I end up with about 2000kg/4400lbs on both front & rear of truck. And this tows great. My TT (Open Road) has the torsion suspension, which does not hurt either.

HENSLEY ARROW HITCH!!!
www.hensleymfg.com/
BY far the best TT hitch there is. Expensive yes but It absolutly eliminates sway with a Equalizer built in.

I have no doubt that the Hensley Arrow hitch is the best anti-sway hitch available. For $3000 it oughta be. (My first good truck didn't cost that much.) I'm just not sure that it is enough better to justify the huge price difference. Not to mention, I didn't want to finance an extra $3000 just for my hitch.
I have an the Equalizer hitch also and have been extremely happy with the performance. http://www.equalizerhitch.com/ I tow a 25' TT that weighs in between 6300 lbs. and 7000 lbs. depending on the trip and the load. Trailer's GVW is 7800.
We bought the trailer and hitch when I still had my 1500. The 1/2 ton QuadCab shortbed handled amazingly well pulling that trailer thanks to the hitch. Never had a sway problem, even passing or being passed by semis on the interstate.
With the 2500, it's even better. I don't have to put much weight on the hitch bars with this truck, but still get good anti-sway handling. We drove to SD and back in June, 750 miles round-trip, weight was right around 7K; most of the trip was through windy WY. Did the speed limit on the interstate, passed semis at will and never swayed once. I can do 80 mph or more if I need to without the trailer moving around at all.
I know the old saying that "you can't put a price on safety," but we do it every day. If we didn't, we'd all buy Freightliners to tow our utility trailers. To me the extra $2500 could be better spent on other safety equipment like keeping the truck and trailer suspension in excellent shape. Buy good tires, good shocks, and keep everything in good repair. $2500 buys a lot of trailer tires.

Re:What kinda' TT hitch?
The type of TT I have is a toybox and right away it is heavier on the hitch because the tires are set back more than normal and it is higher up. Mpty weight is like 8000 and tongue is 1050 lb. this is to allow more weight in the back for balance. I think my tongue weight right now is like 1400 right at the max for the Hensley but the Trailer wieght is like 10 - 11K when My ATV is in there and other camping paraphenalia......

Drawtite makes a class 5 hitch that will handle all the weight you would want to put on a reciever, with equalizer I think it's good for at least 12000#. It has a huge 2.5" receiver which is good if you need to put an extension on to clear your camper of whatever.

Re:What kinda' TT hitch?
There was a thread going on the Titan V hitch a few months ago when we were first looking at a 2003 truck. Reese now has a Titan V received for the 2003. The trouble is they install UNDER the Class IV on the truck, which lowers the height considerably. It also drops the hitch closer to the ground. We have a Titan V on our 1997 Dodge--couldn't use it on the 2003 because the Arctic Fox sits so high. We cleaned out the 1997 getting it ready to sell, then took it and trailer to the scale. Turned out a lot of that weight hubby was blaming on the hitch weight was all the junk he hauls in the bed! Actual hitch weight scaled at 950#--trailer unhooked. Water tank full, but we were short some weight since I had removed canned goods from pantry due hot weather. We dropped back to Reese 1200# bars on the 2003. The 26Z is going to have a heavy hitch weight!
