Weld or bolt SuperGlide Capture Plate to pin box?

I got my Superglide today and started fumbling through the boxes and reading instructions. The instructions for the capture plate suck, I could barely see the pictures. It's starting to confuse me a little.

Could I just bolt the plate on to the pin box with about 6 bolts? Do I need those extension plates? What has everybody else done?

Mine was welded no bolts. I know it is not going anywhere.

Superglide plate

I put in a couple bolts in the back where I could reach inside the pin box and a couple up front and then welded a bead down each side and it has been there for over 5 years.

Read the directions carefully. There is a minimum amount of bolts needed, 10 as I recall, do not use less!!!! Welding it is OK but if you can I would bolt it on. If you ever change trucks you can just unbolt the plate. Or if somebody else pulls the trailer you can unbolt it, and yes there is a adapter plate that works too, but it's 150 bucks. I kept the 150 bucks.....I can undo a lot of bolts for that.
There are 2 different capture plates available; you need to make sure you have the correct one.
I'll snap a few pictures of mine tonight.
You'll love the hitch once it's all setup.

I got the universal plate. It has the plate, two small extension plates, and the knee brace for the front.
I'm definetly not going to weld it on the pin box. Bolts would be fine, besides the bolts are not supporting any weight and used for pulling strength. The king pin does that.

The extension plates is bugging me. the instructions were so dark (very poor pictures) that it doesn't make sense. It says not to have a gap between the plate and pin box. Then it shows a gap between the plate and pin box because of the extension plates?

It all depends on the size of your pin box. Does the capture plate cover the full pin box now? or does it hang over in any areas? Mine does hang over in the rear but not a whole lot, maybe a inch at the most. I think the little side brace's and plates for the front and rear are only if your pin box is much smaller than the capture plate. I did'nt use any of that stuff. I had to use the universal plate also.

I understand the extensions now. My pin box is a lot shorter than the capture plate front and rear. I'm going to weld on the extensions and then bolt the capture plate to the pin box/extensions, I could always take off the capture plate if another truck needs to pull it.

Thanks

Good news for all of us using the SuperGlide. If yo get a 5vr with a Lipert pinbox then you can get the NEW easy to use bolt on adaper plate. It uses 4 allen head screws to hold it in place. I got one for my new 5vr and just love it.
Now for the bad news, I have and adapter plate that will allow those of you that welded your old style to the pinbox to have any one with a 5th wheel hitch to move your 5vr.
