The only drivers worse than Washington drivers (lived there 22 years of my life) are those LOSERS in Colorado. I can't believe how rude they are. I just wish I had been born in Texas because here people are polite and the state also loves to execute people who don't play well with other people.
Anyway, back to the thread. My theory is the troopers are looking for terrorists and using weight limits as an excuse to do so. Could be wrong on this since I've never been a trucker and wasn't aware of June Harassment Month.

I don't know of any states that check private RV's . I know of a couple of commercial haulers that run without signs and fasten a couple of lawn chairs or a bicycle to the back of a new trailer and run past all the scales .
Some of my CHP buddies are in the commercial enforcement division.
Those towing large loads, boats,car haulers,5er's, and multiple trailered rigs i.e. 5er+boat are of special intrest.
The CHP units roll in pickups outfitted with portable scales, creepers, jacks, and tools. They are trained to check out everything from tires and brakes to GVWR by vin#and special liscensing requirements, so if you ever get pulled over by them it will take a while.
FYI the fines from these guys can be in the thousands of dollars

The only times I've been waved over was in SD, NM & TX In SD, they (/) blocked I-90 between Wall and Murdo and had every vehicle pull in. The cars and suv's were waved thru. 2500 and 3500 pickups were visually inspected from HP cars. A couple of them were weighed on portables and let go. An rv'er in front of me pitched a fit about how it was illegal for them to conduct this search. He got the latex glove treatment
I got weighed, my livestock paperwork reviewed and I was freed. That day there was a separate line of 18's going back about a mile.
In NM & TX, both were Federal stops. ICE is looking for smugglers and aliens. Not weighed or inspected, just asked for ID.
One year in Wyoming, every tour bus was stopped on the East Gate road (to Yellowstone) by the WHP and given a "courtesy" inspection, but the drivers didn't have a "choice" in the matter. Five vehicles were tagged and put out of service. Their riders put on other busses later on that day. It tied up traffic for most of the day.

You may be right when it comes to local trucks. Interstate trucks get checked, probably 99%, regularly and constantly. To the point of harrassment. 45,000 people are killed on accidents, 5000 are truck related. About 80$ of the 5000 are due to the actions of a car. So they keep increasing the restrictions and inspections of trucks. Thanks TV.
Safety inspections? No, revenue generation inspections. Working man harrassment inspections. Justify my cushy gov't. job inspections. But they sure aren't safety inspections.
IN KY the Vehicle Enforcement Division ( don't call them DOT ! ) higher 4 new young inspectors that live in Ohio County . These guys are really cracking down on 1 tons and hitting local drivers that are over 10,000 lbs. , usually while pulling trailers and don't have DOT numbers , DOT inspections or medical cards .

Reciprocity kicks in here. If your NON-COMMERCIAL truck/RV is legally registered in Texas, and if you're legally licensed to drive it, then you're legal in the other states through which you travel as long as your home state and those other states are members of the Driver License Compact (46 states, including Texas, are). Driver License Compact states recognize each other's vehicle registrations and driver licenses.

This is of importance to me for several reasons. In Nevada, they offer a NON CDL class A, that does not require a med exam of any kind. As long as its your rig and your stuff for private use I can drive anything. It states singles, doubles, etc on my license as well as greater then 26k.
It seems that the license was invented just for guys that tow their own stuff. Like race cars, large boats, etc.....
So with the reciprocity compact, as I think I understand it, if Im legal in Nevada Im legal in those other 46 states.
