Water temp high?
Water temp high?
I recently pulled the biggest load so far with my truck and I have some questions about the water temps. My truck runs between 195 and 205 degrees empty. Loaded it ran 205 rolling hills and on steep grades it got up to about 225, I was getting pretty nervous I had my xzt off the truck. So I guess my question is do these 600's run this hot or do I have a problem and need to go see DC? What temps do you see on your 600's? Thanks
I found that once I installed my Commander with my XZT that my stock temp gauge is way off. I use to get nervous pulling the 5th wheel in this 100* Texas heat because my stock gauge was above the 1/2 way mark by about 1/8th inch. Once I installed the Commander the first pull showed temps between 188* and 190* in the same heat and the gauge still above 1/2 way. I quit worrying after that.
can a stock trucks Water temp gauge be off?? or is the cummins simply overheating more then the PSD?
A buddy keeps telling me how HOT his brothers 04 cummins gets, and how cool his PSD runs! anything i can tell him?

Like I said above, when towing our 5th wheel (11k) in 100* temps the water temp on the Commander will stay at 190*. On a big hill it may go as high as 193* but is right back to 190* when the road levels off. The stock gauge will be above the 1/2 mark the whole time.
I would be more worried about EGT temps on a long uphill grade under a load than the water temp. I have seen temps in the 1400* range on a long grade and have the Commander set to defuel at that temp to keep from melting the turbo down.

I think the thermostate on the PSD is supposed to come on at lower temps. Am I right? If theirs is set for 165* and is running 180* with a light load(which to me means they are having to fight to keep cool)(all theoretical, I have no idea what theres is set for) and our thermostates are 190 or 195s and don't rise much higher. I think the Duramax's thermostate is set fo 200 something.(I think)

If that isnt a test of the cooling system I don't know what is!! The 600 series cummins do run warmer then the older cummins, my 06 usually runs 200 just driving it around empty. When it comes to exhaust temp the Ford runs a lot hotter then the dodge especially the 6.0. I found as a rule Add 150 to exhaust temp - 20 mph and that is how fast you will be going in the ford

My 04 cummins never ran above 200. yesterday my 06 in 112 heat with the TST on 2/2 pulling a gross load of 40,000 never went above 210

I was told all of the newer diesels run hotter for emission reasons. I do know my CR runs warmer than either my 12 or 24v but it never rises past 210 or so (just to the right of 200) on long hard pulls.
My 04.5 600 seems to run "hot" on the hills. I mean hills though. Talking about 9% grades, etc. With my Superlite loaded to the max ~8K and pulling a 7-9% in 90+ degree weather, I've seen 214 as the hottest water temp. My EGT's were steady at about 1230 and I was around 67 MPH with the hammer down. I had the Juice off and just the EZ on. When I turned the Juice on my EGT's dropped slightly and so did the water but by only 2 degrees and I backed off but maintained speed. My EGT's dropped about 100 degrees. If I had been in 100+ degree weather I would have seen 220 water temp for sure I think. My 2000 QC Dually with stage 1 injectors never would raise the water temp much above 200 not even on the Baker grade pulling 14K in August. I think these trucks are designed to run hotter all of the way around for the CAT's they come with.
