Turnind OD on/off
Turning OD on/off
This is probably a very stupid question, but I'm totally new to diesels & haven't driven a pick-up in over 20 years. Back when, I was used to a stick shift. We got a 2001 Dodge 3500 TD this summer to haul our new 5th wheel camper. It has an automatic transmission. I am wondering if it's OK to switch in or out of overdrive while the truck is actually rolling down the road. Some of the posts seem to make this sound OK, but I'm not totally clear. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
First off, welcome to the site.
To answer your question, I don't see where switching in/out of overdrive hurts anything. If it does, that is news to me.... It has never caused a problem for me....

I think that what you are talking about is that IF the tranny is shifting in and out of OD BY ITSELF (hunting for the correct gear) while towing, then you should turn off the OD. And yes you can turn the OD on or off at any time you want. That is why the switch is there.
