Trailer brake plug????
Trailer brake plug????
Coulda swore the previous owner showed me the factory trailer plug for a brake controler under my dash on this 95 4x4 , he had one but removed it, I cant seem to find it now??? its 4 wires right, black, blue, green, red? with a white plastic end? Anyone steer me in the right direction please!!!
My '95 didn't have one even though it had the towing package with the seven pin plug out back. Had to wire it in the long way. Friend bought a '96 that had the plug and wire pigtail to hook to the controller. I felt betrayed.
I do remember it had the light blue wire ready though. All I had to do was find it in the harness to the left of the steering column. It was labeled for easy detection.

I found a brake light wire marked from DC, a 15 amp max power which I wont use, and a blue lead marked trailer tow b+. There some pretty skimpy wires, 18 guage. My Techonsha reccomends 12 guage I think it said for the brake line out. Time for my own wiring job I think.
The 95 i had was wired up the long way. my 97 ctd is on the left hand side of the steering column tucked up near the brake pedal. my 97 gasser is on the left side of the steering column pushed up in the top wher you would have to remove the lower dash section to access it. Look around, if its there, it may be very well hidden. (mine has a white wire instead of a green wire)

I believe that is correct about the 95 not having the harness. i went and looked at another 95 and it had the brake controler wired up seperately from everything else. that also allows you to run the proper wire gauge as suggested by the maker.
Your right, No plug. But I was wondering on the 7 way plug out back. There is a 12v hot from somewhere in the truck going to it. Fused where??? Is this for charging a battery in the trailer? also the 1 lead under the dash by the fuse block had a paper tag that says 15 amp on 1 side and the other side says trailer tow B+. Is this the factory wire to the rear plug for the brake controller? anyone use it, its mighty small guage it seems.
Thanks All.
Thanks All.
12v at the plug is used to charge the battery on the trailer for the emergency break away pack for the trailer brakes. That is the factory wire that you are talking about. I know some people use it, but people that tow a lot of heavy trailers that have multiple sets of brakes often times will run a heavier gauge of wire. it shouldnt be a problem, but depending on the rest of the system could become the weakest link in your brake system
