Toyo Open Country MT

Just got new Toyo OC MT 35x12.5x17"s. Seem a little squirly right off the bat. Aired up the fronts to 68psi to settile it down some.

I picked these since I'm SRW and I have a #12,000 fifth wheel I tow.

Any suggestions or comments?

Pressure seams a little high. I run 45 ish empty, 50-55 towing. I"m amazed at how my truck can corner.

Might be that 20" wheels need less air. At 60 the fronts look low and the truck feels a little loose as compared to the 35x12.4x17 Vortrac's. Seems I've always needed about 60-70 psi in the front with 17" wheels.

They'll seem squirrely for about a 1000 miles, then firm up. With the wide voids mine are not as accurate steering as my AT's were of the same brand and size. (Toyo 285-75-17). I'm running mine@ 55 psi with the camper load. That's with a 4400# front and 4000# rear axle load.

I'm Going to try 50 rear and 60 front for a while untill i get some miles on them to see if they run in.

The ride is much better than the Vortracs which had some slight over 60 vibration. May have been due to the large amount of balance the Vortracs needed from the get go.

I run 60 psi front and back. Trying to keep the tread running as flat as possible. Haven't towed with much weight on the back axle so I cant say if thats enough or not. And I love the tires too.

They wear out fast. My friends are only seeing about 25K per set.

They look really nice on 2nd gens though

I still want a 275-80-17. A bit skinnier and 34.5" tall than my present tire.

Diesel may never go down with world demand so high.

A skinnier tire would help some.

Its not the demand thats causing our fuel prices. Demand is actually down. In short, oil is a commodity and inflation is setting in with the Federal Reserve printing $100 Billion every month. Its not going to be long before everything cost A LOT.

A skinnier tire would help some.
New Gov legislators would help more.

Sorry to get off topic but I thought you should "really" know why. As for the tires..... I hope mine last more than 25k since they were about $1300 last year. I dont even want to know what they'll cost in a few years.

You guys sound like you're running your tires low. I like to keep mine up around 80psi, + or - 5

When Les Schwab installed them they said 40 psi should be OK. I didn't like that so I increased them to 60 psi. So far with only about 6-7k miles on them, they look to be wearing nicely. Maybe I'll try 80 psi.

The tire shops usually put 60 or so in them. That's for ride quality and such. I was told by a freind / mechanic who is in charge of a good sized fleet of pickups to not be a bit afraid to run a 10 ply (E load range) up to 80 psi, it's rated max. Ever since then I've done it and it has made me a beliver too. You'll get more mileage out of em too, may not be noticable on mud terrains though.

Now this makes more sense to me. Seems that at lower pressures the sidewalls move all over the place. Not a comfortable feeling with a 7200 pound truck. Probably worse with my 5th attached at 18,000 pounds GVW

China and India are gobbling up a lot of diesel. Now Japan's going to have an extreme thirst due to their rebuilding efforts.

Irregardless of the demand debate,it's speculators and oil companies working in concert and gouging us.

But then we know if Bush was still in it would be his fault.

Dont get me started..... They predict fuel to be at least $5 a gallon by summer but of the many sources I hear from.....there's people who are predicting economic melt down in the US by no latter than July, at the current rate Fed's are printing money. There's always a time line on doomsday theory's so we'll just wait.
