Towing Laws

I have been reading on this site about what is allowed, what is not allowed and so on. What I would like to know is-is there a book or website or whatever that will give me all the requirements for the truck and trailer for different loads and different weights. It seems like there should be one somewhere.

your first stop; the the department of motor vehicles for the state of TN. 26,200 lbs is the magic number, but each state has it's own interpertation, as you've probably noticed in reading the web.

second the mfg of your vehicle. no matter if it can physically haul much more then the mfg states on the mfg door sticker they can nail you if you exceed those weights.

third: the hitch and receiver and ball; what are they rated at. there are many times two different allowed tongue and max loaded trailer weights. with or without an equalizer hitch.

fourth: the trailer's weight rating, this is located on the plate or sticker the trailer mfg attached to the trailer. if it is over 10,000 lbs some states require a commercial drivers license.

fifth: your drivers license classification

unless you're commercial, you are only bound by the laws you are registered in, not by the states you are traveling in

Well sorta, but not really. Each individual state can make up their own rules as long as they are at least as stringent as the Fed's.
