Towing debate

Alright. Here's the deal. Mom and dad just bought an 04 Dmax/Allison Crew Cab Shortbed 4x4. Buddy of mine has a regular cab, long bed 2x4 6.0L GAS chevy. He's arguing that the maunal says he can tow MORE (which I don't doubt since he is a lot lighter than the Dmax) but also that he can tow it BETTER. He says from a 50mph roll out with a 10K lb trailer on the back, he would beat me. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but since that Allison is going to keep that engine in it's perfect power band, I should be able to out pull him no matter what. Right?

You'll stomp him. Bet him a hundred bucks. Do it on a hill for more fun.

Re:Towing debate

I'm still willing to bet that the Dmax whoops the gas engine. Chips for stock gas engines only add like 15hp and torque. Give or take 5. Not enough to compete.

Re:Towing debate

My last truck was a 01 2500HD with the 6.0 and a 5 speed. With a 24 foot trailer full of cattle, the truck was a traffic hazard on hills. We had a old chevy flatbed with a vortec 350 that would out pull the 6.0.

I bet you that since that motor is new that if I had my dad's supercrew with all the bolt ons that he had on there I would whoop it. Keep in mind I could scratch 2nd just by keeping my foot into it. It was also 4wd. So those chips help alot. :P

Re:Towing debate

Race him to Dallas and back, you will beat him by 2hr and not even have to speed. You will need to fuel in Fairfield on the way up and Conroe on the way home. He will need to fuel in Conroe, Fairfield, and Dallas and on the way back in Fairfield, Conroe, and Houston, The D-max will beat him on mileage alone.

I have a buddy of mine with a supercharger on a 6.0 (Whipple) and he cannot keep up with a stock DMax. Take his money and run.

You're a shoe-in. Take his money. But don't bet too much. He'll know you're for certain. Maybe go $250. All I know is that 10,000 lbs. is significant, not outlandish by any means, but significant.

I think all I would do to race him is pull the shifter down to whatever gear the Allison would wind up in, if you were to floor it at 50. Maybe 4th? 3rd? That way you wouldn't have to wait on the transmission to shift. Also, have it in tow/haul mode. Just after you get your foot to the floor and the truck is starting to accelerate, put the shifter back in ' D ' and let the Allison do the rest.

Then be ready to graciously accept some $. Try not to do this , or this ;D .

Re:Towing debate

When ever I race from a rollin start i wait for the TC to lock up and then stomp which makes it stay in 3rd and then I put the overdrive back on. I can be just crusing and be around 3-4 psi and wait for the TC to lock up and punch it and spool to 25 and it wont shift. Just keeps on pullin'.
