towing a 12000lb trailer with factory hitch

Hi fellas need some help here. I have a 04.5 ram with the factory hitch set-up. Now I took my 34ft sandpiper toyhauler to the scales today and it came in at a wooping 10,200lbs empty. Dispite what the factory said it was 8,200lbs, huge difference. anyways my hitch is rated at 12,000 lbs, my weight distrabution set-up is rated at 10,000lbs with 1000lb bars. now I will probably upgrade the w/d system, should i upgrade the hitch. fully loaded i'll probably be at 12000-12500 with 2 quads and water in the back .Thanks. Any recommendations to make my truck pull better.

From what I understand, you definitely want to upgrade to a Class V receiver, and all the pieces in between. It's not necessarily that what you have will fail, but if you ever get into an accident situation, the insurance company won't cover you if you were towing our of spec, be it what you were pulling was too heavy or your towing equipment was not rated for what you were pulling.
As may can attest to, the insurance companies would like to turn down any claim they can, even on a technicality. This can be even worse if it's your fault and the ambulance chasers get involved. Your insurance company will wash their hands of you and then the lawyer on the other side will use the equipment against you. If you can stay just under 12K, with WD, then you will be OK, within spec.

You didn't mention tongue weight of the trailer, that is probably the biggest factor when pulling a tag trailer.

Did you talk to the trailer manufacturer about the little 2,000 lbs whoops on their advertised total weight of their product? I can see a couple of hundred error, but a ton of error seems all wrong!? Seems like they should pick up the ticket on the needed hitch parts and labor! Did you use Certified scales like CAT?

.if you read all of the rv sites you will learn how they dont weight it at the heavyest it could be with all the options plus you will be more than 12500 with quads @ water because that has a what a 120 gal tank on it thats 1100 hundred pounds of water alone not including fuel/tools & everything else that goes in it. you will be more around 13-15k loaded. thats why i went with a 33'weekend warrior 5th.

Not with the Putnam but you should be fine. Check the toungue weight specs for the receiver and the hitch and weigh the trailer loaded so you'll know what you got.
Get a top quality brake controller too.

I have the Putnam Class V receiver, which is great, but my WD setup is a Reese. What kind of experience are you looking for?
