Slow down while towing

At minimum, once a year ( I'm sure its much more) some idiot drives too fast on our highways, pulling a house trailer, and winds up flipped over.

https://patch.com/new-jersey/parsipp...fic-delays-287

Why? They All drive too fast.

And the reason why have dually trucks available for purchase in this country is to be able to utilize the desined stability for the right reasons.

Bunch of coconuts....

One more Cummins motor in a scrap yard.....

Agreed! I rarely tow at more than 65 mph in 5th gear. I have a lot of people pass me with 3/4 tons (of all brands) towing a 40' toy hauler like I'm sitting still.

I've always towed at 65 mph, which seems to be a "sweet spot" for a Cummins engine, taching about 1800 rpm. Also, we all know that over 2000 rpm the mileage takes a hit. Just my two cents.

Read the fine print of the RV owner's manual. They all say "Do not exceed 55 MPH." I was surprised to find this on my Lance camper also. Everyone is in such a hurry on vacation.

A camper has the aerodynamics of a cheese box, and a 2RW pickup has the stability of a marshmallow. What could possibly go wrong at 75 mph?

Don"t forget all the cheap Chinese tires the manufacturers are installing. My first set lasted 1 year before they showed cracks from dry rot.

Even if you buy domestically made tires, the tire speed limit is 65 mph!

I can't tell you the number of times a long fifth wheel has blown by me at 80+ only to have me pass them later on the the side of the road with a blown tire (or two).

Glad you made the point about trailer Tires. Most trailer tires are rated for 65mph. Once that speed is reached, the trailer tire starts loosing carrying capacity. The only exception I known is the Goodyear H Rated G114 which is 75 mph. Don’t think I want to run 75 mph. My normal tow speed is 63-65mph.

I do better towing in 5th gear for fuel milage than in 6th as it won’t stay in 6th anyway. In and out, in and out. Need more rear ratio to stay in 6th, to much load. Rpm, 2150-2200. Like having 4:30 gears.

With the tall trailer, there's a noticeable drop in fuel mileage between 60 and 65. It goes down from there at an exponential rate.

Everytime l tow. I see at least 12 or more morons towing there trallers over 75 mph. Some trailers are 40 ft or more and there tow vehicle is overloaded. I tow my vehicle at 60 to 65 over 90% of the time on a freeway. My vehicle is a dually with a exhaust brake. I always watch my down hill speed. I don't tow any heavy trailer with anything but a dually. I also weigh my rig before I travel to make sure I am not overloaded. There are lots of opinions on what happen. But I would never tow a heavy cyclone with a 3/4 ton. Now that is a real moron move. This is why these kind of accidents will continue.

Up here in Alaska, you get a lot of tourists that think our roads are for racing. Even a lot of the locals will drive like idiots. With the number of broke down and wrecked RVs at the side of the road or in the ditch, you'd think they would figure that out. BUT NOOOOOO! I quit being in a hurry a long time ago. 55 is my limit towing or not. My teeth are happier for it.

I tow a heavy 5ver and towing in the 65 - 68 MPH range is definitely the sweet spot for my set up. That puts me in the 1900 - 2000 RPM range where the engine makes a decent amount of power and holds modest hills well, etc.
