Pick up 6 south of Provo, and take that to I-70 in Green River. Then through Moab, and follow 191 to Monument Valley.

Pay the toll at the navaho indian reservation and take the tour.

A short jog south and then east will bring up through southern CO and northern NM.

Places to think about visiting are Mesa Verda NP, Durango, Pagosa Springs, Bandolier NM, and Los Alamos.

Norther AZ south of Monument valley, and then east of there through Shiprock and Farmington is all desert.

Since the OP asked the best route, go with this post. If you're interested in sight-seeing, the first poster had some ideas, but not the best (most direct) route.
