Pulling a TT and a second trailer?

I was driving down I-5 in CA. and saw a guy pulling a TT around 20-25 ft long with a small boat following behind! I have never seen that configuration before on a ball hitch. I actually thought it was illegal. I have seen many 5th wheel set ups pulling a second trailer but not a ball hitch. Is this right? If so I'm going to find a way to pull my row boat behind my TT. Does anyone know the laws behind this?

It is totally dependant on individual state towing laws. It is legal in some states and not others. There are lots of websites that show tables of what is legal in what states.

Here is one:

http://www.rvsafety.com/state.htm

This one is a downloadable .pdf:

http://www.aemfg.com/Instructions/Towing-Laws.pdf

Hard to say if this information is current and accurate, but it's a place to start. Before towing, I would call each state and verify.

Oh and don't forget, when double towing, drive as if your truck did not have reverse.

If you go by what those sites tell you, you will get inaccurate info. Most states allow two trailers ONLY if the first trailer is a "semi" (fifth wheel). If you want to find out go directly to your local state patrol baracks and ask. I did and the officer coppied the laws right out of his own hand book.

That is illegal in CA, but I am almost certain that it is legal in NV and UT.

The link to the aemfg info looked like it had the most accurate info I've seen yet.

That's exactly why I suggested you call each state you want to tow in and verify. I am pretty sure I've seen inaccurate info on every one of these tables posted. The one at aemfg.com id probably one of the better ones, but I wouldn't trust any of them as a sole source of info.

Just thought they might be a helpful place to start.
