Prodigy recommends that you start at 6.0 and increase braking until the trailer will lock up during a 20mph panic stop. Then back off slightly on the controller. I run boost 2 or 3 in dry higher speed driving and no boost in the rain with the max set at between 8.0 and 9.0 with an approx. 6,500lb trailer.

3,000# gross single axle trailer fully loaded:

Dialed to 6, boost 1

10,000# gross dual axle trailer at 7,500#:

Dialed to 12, boost 3 on pavement, boost 0 on gravel

Boost 1 or higher does more than boosting the degree of brake application. It lightly applies the trailer brakes as soon as the brake light comes on, thus eliminating the small lag in trailer braking that occurs when you rely on the controller detected inertia change alone.

The only reason I turn off boost on gravel or dirt is my equipment trailer brakes lock on loose surfaces if I don't. This particular trailer, a Kaufman, has brand X brakes, in other words, not Dexters, and I wish to hell I had never bought it.
