I want to see everyones home made toy haulers. I bought one a year ago and it has been nothing but a pain in the but and is not holding up at all. I have been seriously considering building my own and want to see what everyone else has done. I use it to haule my ATVs to Colorado and such places. I have seen some on here that where 5th wheel campers mounted to flatbead goosneck trailrs and one that someone just extended the frame on a fifth wheel and added a 3rd axle. I am leaning twards buying a 5th wheel and mounting it to a goosneck trailer as it will give me the payload I am looking for. I want to know details as to the size of camper and trailer that where used and exactyl how you mounted the camper to the trailer. Pics are great so if ya got them post em, especialy closeups of details if posible. I would like to have 14 feet of trailer space availaible after the camper is mounted to it. Thanks.

 

Some time back I saw a large gooseneck trailer that this fellow had what looked like a fifth wheel trailer built on it. The built on RV only used about half of the bed. I do not have pictures. After looking at what he did, I concluded it would be a fairly simple task to buy a large gooseneck trailer and find a fifth wheel trailer, remove the axles and mount it to the bed of the gooseneck trailer with the bedroom portion over the front frame. Find the right size fifth wheel trailer and leave the desired space behind for hauling toys. The rear portion could also be enclosed.

I have no desire to do this myself, but it did look like a good idea.

The camper is held on with tie downs. He built the cabinets for extra water and other storage. I guess there is no limit to how big a camper you want to strap on there, you just get a bigger gooseneck, but then you will run into access issues in remote areas. The fifth wheel trailer with axles removed would likely be easy to mount as it will have a substantial frame to bolt to the gooseneck. Plumbing could be an issue, but if its all tucked into the factory frame you have an easy install.

 

Thats along the lines of what I want to do, just with a bigger camper and trailer. I know I will be sacraficing accesability in the remote areas if I get to big, but I also know I could get it into or at least close to where I want it to be in Colorado. I figure I will remove the decking where the camper is sitting so that the camper plumbing will still be open and accesible from the bottome. I may just get a nice 5th wheel camper and try pulling a small trailer for a year and see if i can tolerate that with out going threw all the work of mounting it to a flatbead. The only real drawback is that I REALY want a 14x8 platform to haul 4 machines on. I wont put much of a trailer behind the camper so if i cant get away with only having 2 machines along I will have to go ahead with the conversion.

 

Here is a thought... Go with a 7x8 (times 2)... Meaning have a double decker that folds down with an electric or hydraulic actuator/winch. It should not make the quad's ride any higher than the trailer...

I have seen it done on a car hauler >>> it was a 4 car hauler that had the length of a 2 car hauler... You loaded 2 cars and raised them up and then loaded 2 under them... very creative use of space.

You read my mind. I have been thinking the exact same thing for a while now. My problem is that I typicaly only need to cary 2 machines but when we take our yearly trip to Colorado there is usaly 5-8 of us going. It would be handy to be able to get all the machines on 1 rig. If I double decked the 7X14 area that would make room for up to 8 machines. I asume that you where meaning for me to double deck them to get 4 machines on. That may end up being the way I go depending on what camper and trailer I end up finding.

 

I built this 40 footer this spring....loaded with my Land Cruiser it scales at 16,000 lbs.

 

you could also get a large enclosed gooseneck car hauler and build living quarters in the front part and use the back part for your quads.... it seems that gooseneck car trailers are usually built better than most toy haulers...

 

Yeah... It would definitely be a one of a kind rig! If you are going to go through the trouble to put a fiver on a flatbed... then adding the 2nd deck wouldn't be that big of an issue....
There are a number of ways that it could be done while being stable and secure... Keep us posted if you decide to go that route... I would like to keep up with that!

I'm looking to do the same thing so I can trailer my jeep to rides and still have a camper once I get there.

I've seen many trailers set up w/ a pop up camper on the front, if six adults are all that's going.

 

Hers a bigger picture....still trying to figure this thing out....I was originally planning on a 40 ft enclosed trailer but decided I did not want to smell swamp or worse yet gear lube in my living area all the time...works well with quads as well...me a 3 buddies took it out west prairie dog hunting and the deck worked nicely to clamp three reloading presses to as well.

Sorry to hear your Cherokee is not working out like you had hoped. IT looks like an awesome trailer. I have been happy so far with my Weekend Warrior FS2600, but I probably don't travel as far away with it as you do yours.

I was going to mention that member DrillPipe has a nice rig that might be what you have in mind......

 

The build quality of the camper is not worth a hoot. Ever time we hook onto it something else dont work or a tire blows out. We have taken it on 3 trips so far and each one of them was around 2000 miles round trip. I am having a HARD time of convinsing the wife to let me mount a camper to a goosneck trailer. We use it abought every other weekend for just camping at the local campgrounds and she dont want to be seen around here in a frankenstien type of trailer. I am also reserching the idea of just getting a normal 5th wheel camper and putting a small trailer behind it for the times we take the machines along. We realy only use it a few times a year as a toy hauler the rest of the time its just a camper. Its not as comfy inside as a normal camper and we wouldent mind the extra comfort while camping on the weekends. That and the campers we are looking at are a little to nice to start hacking apart to mount to a trailer.
