newbie question....where is the wiring for the brake controller?

Hello,

I went to look under the dash per the owners manual that says the wiring should be to the left of the brake pedal.

the only thing i found was a connector that had two wires in it. a red wire and a red wire with a yellow stripe.

where is the blue/white/black/ etc wires?

I ordered my truck with the trailer tow package.....just not sure where hte wires are in the cab? I checked the engine compartment firewall but did not see much there either?

Please clue me in.......thanks in advance

I'm not sure about the newer trucks, but on both of mine there is a blue plug just to the right of the e brake pedal up on the firewall. That's where mine plugged in with an adapter that had the 4 wires to attach to the controller. Hope that helps.

It's there. I just hooked mine up. The plug is a light blue color, kind of up high by the clutch pedal or close to the steering column. Also, don't use the plug that came with your truck. I got a plug from my RV store that plugs into the under-dash plug and the back of my Prodigy controller...no wiring, splicing, etc..

I couldn't find mine at first, you need to look right up against the firewall above the E brake pedal Kinda hard to get to. It has four terminals and is white(edit...I guess its blue? But it looks like a receptical on the fire wall not a wiring harness hanging down.

If you still can't find it. PM me and I'll send you a pic...

It's up there. I just installed my Prodigy last week. I had to hunt for the blue connector. I have the auto (no clutch pedal) and it was way up almost unreachable left of the steering column behind a big white wiring connector. It was kind of tied up so I tugged on it and it turns out that it has a wire-tie of some kind that is notched for easy breakaway. After tugging just a little, it broke free and I was able to pull it down far enough to work with. Like Buzz said, if your brake controller mfr has an option for brand specific wiring harnesses (Prodigy does), use that. They're something like $10 and make the whole operation plug-and-play. Then, the only unnerving part of the project is drilling holes in your $40k dashboard

Good luck,
Neil

Newbie here also. I am looking into putting in a goose neck hitch. I was wondering how to put the connection in the bed. Has anyone done this, them self? I have no idea how to do this, and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg to do this when I can do it myself. Any Help?

The manual should have said to the left of the E-brake pedal, not brake pedal, it's way up there along the firewall.

Ballistic, I've seen a harness to extend the connection from the bumper up to the ball, maybe they have them at the rv dealers?

On my 1997 someone had spliced a cable close to the bumper connecter and ran it up the left rear stake pocket then along the under side of the bed rail to a female 7 way connecter attached to the wheel well.

Thanks for the info. I am afraid of trying to splice into the lines. I really don't want to take it to someone if I could find an easier way. My friend just pulls the connection lone down to his bumper when he needs to use his gooseneck. I don't like that, cause I would be afraid of it getting caught on something. If the make a connection that you can run up there, I would buy that. I am going to check the RV store.

When they installed the hitch in my truck they put a new plug in the rear corner pillar post about 2" below the stake hole. It is a very handy location in that you can reach over the tailgate to plug/unplug, and the routing of the wires to it is a straight shot from the factory one. On prior trucks I have had them forward in the bed and on the wheel well, but it seems I was always having to move something to access the plug...

Yep it's there. It is not only way left and way high but facing straight up in the air. I had to get on my back & wiggle my head against the clutch pedal and use a flash light to find it then use my finger tips to feel the top of it to make sure it was the right one. BTW Those Protogy controllers are nice.

PS - I also bought the adapter that plugs directly into it just to find that there was one from the factory in the back seat storage area.

I only paid $50 to have this done including parts - well worth it IMHO. I positioned mine on the driver's side front of the wheel well. I've had it behind the wheel well and this position (for me) is much easier to deal with. It's a reach over the bedrail on a 4x4, but I'm 5'9" and I can do it from the ground (especially when the 5er weight is on the truck). Now I have the wheel to wheel nerf bars, so it's a piece of cake. With the rear position, you have to reach over a lowered tailgate or squeeze in the 6-8" between the fiver and the bedrail - a real PITA.

There is a pic in my gallery of the blue connector. The picture also shows a white Prodigy brake controller harness plugged into the truck's blue connector. Unfortunately, the picture doesn't show any surrounding items like the emergency brake, dash, etc so it's difficult to find it by only looking at the picture. But like many others have said, just look above and behind the emergency brake.
