Well I did it. I got a new 5th Airborne pin box for my fiver. I have to say that it works better than I expected it to. I was contemplating getting rid of my 5er because the chucking was so bad that my wife would not ride in the truck when I pull the trailer. The air pin box took most of the chucking away. In stead of it giving use wiplash from chucking back and forth it now just acts like hitting a bump with the normal initial bump and then it stops. I towed my trailer 650 miles with my wife and 2 dogs in the truck. The dogs used to get car sick because of the chucking so bad that it was hard to tow it for more than 4-5 hours. On this trip they did not get sick at all. I would never own another 5er without an air ride pin box on it. It was some of the best money I have spent on my trailer. I am not affiliated with 5th Airborne, I am just giving you my review of how it works. There are other brands out there so do you own homework.

I'd been kicking around air ride, especially the air ride hitch systems, but they are super-expensive and I already have a good hitch (B&W).

Maybe one of the air ride pin boxes would be a decent solution for me, too...

 

I too have been contemplating getting one but as said the hitch systems are well out of my budget. Glad to see you write this up as it helps in the decision making.

 

what did you have to pay for the pin box? i've been thinking about the sidewinder model for the short beds made by fifth airborne.

 

I paid $680 from tweetys. They were the cheapest I found on the web and they had free shipping.

 

i have the trailair air ride pin box and equa-flex on the trailer suspension and it makes all the difference in the world. when driving down the road i can see the trailer hitting bumps that are absorbed by the air ride otherwise like said above all the force would be transfered to my truck.

 

How would you say this compares to the MorRyde? I see they have it on ebay for about $560 shipped.

 

I would say that the More Ride pin box will work for the chucking action of a 5er but will not help with vertical jolts.

 

The chucking forward & back seem to be my only problem(10K lbs.) What do you mean by vertical jolts?

 

The air ride pins absorb shock in both directions, forword& back and up and down. When I am going down the road I can look in my mirror and see the pin box floating up and down as well as forword and back. The up and down was not as important to me as the chucking. If you do not have a problem with it now then the more ride will probably work well for you.

 

I took our fifth wheel to the Yukon and Alaska without one. Going across the "top of the world" highway from Dawson City to Tok, Ak I broke every glass plate and cup in our rear kitchen. I now have the Trailair and Equa-Flex system on my trailer and won't be without it. The only other option to consider, if you can afford it, is an air ride hitch. That way if you keep the truck you still have your air ride. If I sell my trailer I may have to buy another air ride pin box.

 

Our Montego Bay 5th wheel came with a 5th Airborne pinbox. We LOVE it. You can almost leave a drink on the counter and travel to your next campground and the drink will be in the same spot.

Forest River 5er's can be purchased with an air ride pin box. It is a $650 option, and as a professional RV delivery contractor, I can personally say it is worth every penny. It is not a cost, it is an investment in your RV, personal safety, and personal comfort.
