Buddy is looking at a megacab. Wanted to verify if the bed is any shorter/different than the standard shortbed. I thought I remember something also about trouble findinf 5er hitch or something. Just double checking for him if there are any "towing" related issues in purchasing a megacab.

 

There are towing related issues with MegaMonster duallies. The GVW is only 10.5k.

 

1. Short bed (same as other Ram short beds) - potential 5th wheel to cab interference

2. Low GVWR (10,500 lbs) - extremely limited pin weight capacity

I don't think towing was a priority when Dodge designed the Mega

 

I don think payload was either,so what was it designed to do? It cant tow much or carry much ,its more like a big car with a bed,and a Cummins. The 1500 Mega cab has more payload than a 2500 Mega cab CTD,figure that one out logically. The 2500s should be 9990GVWR,the 3500 SRW should be 11,500,the dually should be 13,000.Then they could compete with Ford,and actually handle an average pin weight of most 5er's the owners buy these trucks to pull.

 

It was designed to carry 6 burly men in the cab with room in the bed for their tactical load-outs

 

I find mine to tow more with less strain than my '02 or '03 QC LWB DRWs.

I love it for towing!

 

For the Mega Cab having such a low GVWR, I sure see them hauling the heavy mail. What's that 37' Cedar Creek 5er weigh in at 12K-13K, pin weight 2500lbs.
I'm not pulling that much now, But I'll be darn close to it in the next few months with a SRW Mega Cab 3500. I won't fill one bit bad about it or unsafe hauling 12K w/ a pin weight nearing 2400lbs with air bags, jake, and some common sence.

 

There's much confusion here.

First of all, the SRW Megacabs have as much GVWR as the other Dodge 3500s: 9900 pounds. That's the same as a Chevy 3500HD, and I'm not sure about Ford... but what does Ford matter anyway?

The low GVWR comes with the last generation of Dodge duallies - not just Megacabs, but all the dually variations. Those are the trucks with the highly questionable 10,500# GVWR.

The Megacab has a slightly higher curb weight than the smaller trucks and will have a slightly smaller cargo capacity, but it's on the order of 200#, nothing more.

 

I just checked the Dodge website - a 4x2 Quad Cab long bed dually has a GVWR of 11,500#.

So there you have it - nothing wrong with Dodge duallies or megacabs.

 

Yours is a 4x4. As I said, the 4x2 I checked was 11,500#.

4x4 or 4x2 shouldn't have an effect on the GVWR.

 

Yes, the 4x4 is generally higher to allow for the extra weight of the drivetrain. This allows them to rate the 4x2 and 4x4 with comparable payloads. Check out the website for yourself.
