I was just wondering what the max people have pulled with their trucks. I am going to pull my gooseneck with 14k on it and it weighs 6.5k for a total of 20.5k. Just curious if people pull more than that or close to it. Going to go 7k miles round trip. Empty half and full the other way.

 

That all depends on who you want to listen to. A large faction of drivers are infatic to not exceed the carring weight in the manual, and then there are the rest of us that tow heavier. If you follow the rules, tire capacity, axle capacity, max gross weight of the truck and trailer, you will get up around 30,000 depending on your tires and braking system of the trailer. Look into it good before you make this decision. If the truck and trailer rating is over 26,000 it is a whole new can of worms. Big insurance, cdl, etc. The engine will pull more than you can safely put on the truck no matter which rear gearing that you have. Most improtant, never exceed you tire rating, you cannot safely do that and live.

 

Like Haulin In Dixie said the truck will tow more then its rated for...but to be safe stay within the Equipment rated limits....and braking becomes more Important then fact that you can reach speed....I have towed many times with a GVW of 28000-29000 and found no problems going down the hwy but have gotten into the habit of leaving a bigger buffer zone to allow for stopping

 

I ve seen many guys that had to be easily 30+ k probably a few at 40k.....<br><br>Just recently I saw three roll back tow trucks on about a 50 ft gooseneck, had to be 40000.........stranded my neck checking it out.......Definately takes set up to do it.<br><br>

I do have an exhaust brake so it should help. My tires are rated at 3500lbs a tire. I do wish that I had a daulie but I think the truck should handle the task. Just keep her below 70mph. I am making the trip around the end of august. Anchorage Alaska to Taylorville Illinois. 3800 miles.

 

I towed a load over Parleys canyon (out side of Salt Lake that was 23850 lbs. 40 mph over the top. It was all the truck wanted to handle. But it did all right. It &quot;bucked&quot; a little bit but was not too bad. I don't know if a long bed or a dually would help with that situation or not. Just remember to leave more stopping room.<br><br>Jason
