How much can I haul

I have a 24' gooseneck with two 7000 lb axles. The trailer weighs 5200 lbs. That leaves 8800 lbs, I have a friend with a 14000 lbs tractor. Is that to much weight to haul with my trailer?

Scooter

Re:How much can I haul

The axles do not carry the total weight of the trailer, you must subtract the "tongue weight" that is transfered from the trailer to your truck, whatever remains is your (trailer) axle load. Also check the load that your trailer tires are capable of carrying at maximum inflation, I would be more inclined to SLIGHTLY overload axles for a short run that I would be to overload tires.

Are you planning to tow across town (maybe ok) or across the country (I wouldn't)?

You should be alright for a local run but like nevada said across country probably not and make sure your tires are inflated to the right psi

Lets see the truck weighs 7000 lbs and the trailer weighs 5200 lbs and the tractor weighs 14000 lbs. Thats 26,200 lbs. you need a CDL. You need to put 5200 on the tounge weight. The truck would haul the tractor OK, but you would be illegal and if you get stopped or are in a accident you would charged. He had better be good friend.

Will it haul it, yes.... That being said, your tires will be overloaded on the trailer, the axles will be overloaded or close, and you legally need a CDL..... Don't get caught.

Thanks for the input guys. I know I need a cdl for that weight, but There is not alot of people around here. I agree with the general concensus. I would haul it short, but not long.

I wouldn't worry too much about the CDL since you're hauling a tractor, the authorities shouldn't give you much trouble since it's farm use. You really need farm tags on the trailer, but they'd have to be pretty picky to stop you.

Re:How much can I haul

I used to haul a 15,000lb tractor on a 20 ft. trailer with the same axles as you. The farthest I ever went was 30 miles, and I stopped once to let the tires cool off. They were very warm. Like they said earlier, the axles should be ok, it's the tires that you should worry about.

Don't forget, even though the truck will pull the load, it is also necessary to STOP : ???

Laws differ from state to state, generally if your haulling recreationally you don't need a CDL. Check your state for RV endorcements that may be required for certain size load or trailer set ups. BUT!!! if ANY money changes hands including your buddy giving you gas money, you are opening the doors to requiring a CDL. CDL required or not, the ticket for an unsafe load is applicable and expensive and you may get parked. Stay safe....
Don

Private and not for hire makes a difference on authority, insurance, and others, but a truck is a truck as far as the laws go. If you are over 26,000, usually rating, you have to have a cdl and regardless you have to comply with the laws regarding operating the truck. If you are over three axles you have to have a fuel permit in most states. Of course farm plated trucks are different.

Yeah just checked a motor carrier officer, it's been updated. 26,001 or better when including the tow vehicle requires a class A regardless of use. 26,001 or better for single veh requires a B.
