Hitch wars, are you ready??

I want to upgrade my hitch that tows my 28' Sunnybrook but I don't know which is best. No Hensley right now.

Can you guys give me some feedback, good or bad, on Equalizer vs. Reese. The hitch has to have weight distribution and sway control. I do not care about money (to a point).

Which is better?

Thanks.

I installed this hitch a few months ago. It mounts to the frame at several points and also to the OEM hitch cross tube. It is STOUT.

PourinDiesel uses this same hitch for sled pulling. This thread has some pics.

Hope that helps.

Ok, I'm an idiot. I don't mean the receiver that bolts to the truck's under carriage, I mean the hitch that attaches to the trailer and to the ball on the truck. My '05 came with an OEM receiver/hitch/whatever you call it.

Sorry Jim. I am probably the idiot... I should have looked at your post better. That's what I get for posting when it's late and im tired.

But the Putnam XDR is an excellent receiver hitch over our stockers.

I just purchased an Equal-i-zer hitch 12K rating for $399 + $20 for the 2 5/16 ball with free shipping over the weekend from HERE. It will be here tomorrow. Free shipping on 107 POUNDS of steel!

My Dad (line truck driver 30 years) has been using this hitch for the last 20 years to pull his junk. He swears by this model weight distribution hitch. I believe Equal-i-zer actually invented the concept, but I can't find that info.

The only thing I remember you need to watch out for is to remove the bars when traveling slow off-road or there can be too much load placed on the trailer's hitch like when going over a ditch for example.

I have no experience with the Reese style hitches. With my Dad's satisfied 20 year experience with his Equal-i-zers, I just took his advice and used what I saw work.

I too bought an equalizer hitch to tow my 24' enclosed trailer. It was swaying all over the place behind my Dodge prior to the equalizer (which, oddly enough it never did behind my 1987 Ford). With the equalizer the sway is gone.........not reduced.......GONE! Can get noisy if you don't lube it, but otherwise no complaints. I'd buy it again.

Just back from a 5000 mile trip with an Equalizer

I'm just back from a 5000 mile trip. Ram 2500 pulling a 28 foot Weekend Warrior toy hauler with an Equalizer. Drove Texas to Dakotas to Montana and back. Lots of wind up on the plains and while it wasn't fun driving, no swaying and had a smooth level ride. I've apparently got a bit more tongue weight than I expected, but was able to adjust such that things were evened out.

In my opinion, the Equalizer is a good design. It gets the job done with a minumum of parts. Some of the others look overly complex and don't always handle both sway control and load equalizing within the basic design.

Great feedback guys, like you Stezlaki I pulled my TT with '93 Ford and NO sway. Hooked it to my '05 and it sucked, really miss the way the Ford handled it. Part of the problem, I'm sure, stems from the hitch setup which needs some adjustment but I really want some sway control so it's good to hear the Equalizer is up to the job.

I'll put in a vote for the Reese dual cam HP. It works much like the equalizer, cost is about the same but much quieter around corners. I use this setup on our 7000lb 26' TT and have no issues.

You will get just as many votes for the equalizer and Reese if you wait long enough. Pick you poison and set it up correctly, don't let a dealer install, it will be wrong or you'll have the only dealer I've ever read about that installs them correct. They just slap them on and get you out the door, the equalizer has several washers to pivot the ball back so the WD bars actually lift the rear of the truck up. The Reese doesn't use washers but rather a 5 point star type washer with different spacing to move the ball back, same theory. There is a Reese Dual Cam and the Dual Cam HP the HP has the anti sway the Dual Cam only has WD. good luck.

Yep. Another vote here for the Reese Dual Cam HP. I have the 1200 lb trunnion bar setup and pull a 9000 lb travel trailer and it's pretty much rock solid, even with a 1200 lb golf cart in the bed.

I pulled the same trailer with my 1/2-ton Titan before the Megacab and the dual cam did a great job of controlling the trailer with that setup also.

Awesome, the HP sounds good, really need the sway control. Thanks.

Where does a guy go to buy an HP? Are there any good internet sites to visit?

You can go here http://www.reese-hitches.com/WD/dt_sway_controls.html this is the HP portion only (anti sway), you will still need the WD setup.

I'd call around to a few dealers in the area, I purchased mine 3 years ago for ~400 I think, it was part of the trailer purchase.

I agree with the post above get the 1200lb bars even though you might only have 700lbs of tongue weight. My 700lb bars are needing replaced after 3 years of camping. Still works just fine but I don't float over drops like I used too.
