Question hitch mounting question

I am picking up a spanking new 5er on Friday and they are installing the reese 16k hitch. I am wondering if I should let them use the universal installation kit or have them do the custom kit for another $200.00. Anyone have an opinion? Should I be concerned about them drilling into the frame? They do not weld.

As far as the kit goes, check them both out and look for weak spots. It seems to me like the custom kit might not be the way to go, and I only say that because I am assuming that someone makes this kit in the garage or shop. Check out their welding credentials first. I'd trust a weld from an old boy or robot that makes things day in and day out and probably has a certification. I'd be a little leary of a shop weld from someone who just opened up a truck goodies dealer because he knows a little about it. I'm assuming a lot here, but maybe it will spark some thought.

As far as the mounting to the frame, usually drilling won't weaken the frame if the holes are kept small and not in a critical location. I wouldn't let them weld it even if they would. You can't replace it or work on it if it goes bad or bends or anything like that. Just make sure they use at least grade 5 if not grade 8 bolts and put some sort of lock-tite or threadlocker on them. Also wouldn't hurt to check all the bolts when you get home. After my post a few days ago about my folding gooseneck hitch pin coming out, I'm in check and double check mode.

Good luck. Let me know if I can help you further.

Thanks for the repy 4X4. The custom install kit I am talking about is made by Reese. It amounts to plates mounted to the frame verses L-brackets. Both set-ups are manufactured by Reese so the workmanship probably isn't an issue.

Installing with the universal l-brackets usually requires drilling/welding the frame, so that's probably why they have the custom brackets, I would spend the extra money and get it right the first time.

I'd go all out, but that is just me. I load the crud out of my truck. I would get the custom as opposed to the "L-bracket" style. I think it is safer, but that is just me. Good luck.
