Help me decide which truck will be better for towing... (or confirm my guess :))

Well guys, gotta question for you:

I am hoping to find a gooseneck horse trailer in the next month or so. It will be used primarily for hauling the horses (two of them) and from time to time my little Yanmar tractor, etc.

Which truck has the better setup for towing this weight?

This is the kind of trailer that I am HOPING to find, but it may end up being smaller.

Help me decide which truck will be better for towing... (or confirm my guess :))-0101070103020104022007090189104671ff8e0c76720091ed.jpg

Anyway, mainly out of curiosity, would the 2500 or the 3500 be a better truck for pulling this trailer with 2 horses or maybe my little tractor (its not all that heavy).

2500 has 4.10s, everything else is stock, including the transmission.

3500 has 3.54s, dual wheels, and the single disk Goerend TC and VB on a freshly rebuilt tranny. Anything else is listed in my signature.

Thanks for opinions!

Dennis

I'll have to go with the 3500. It has drw, which is more stable with a load, and it has a slightly build tranny. The 3.54s will be more than fine with 2 horses or more. My friend pulls a 32' goosneck flatbed (about 3k lbs or so) with a 7500lb tractor sometimes, no problems with 3.54s. And there are a ton of people on here that pull more than that all the time.

I would venture a guess that the 4.10 would pull better as 3.54 sounds mighty tall.

On the other hand stability would be better with the dually.

I haven't had issue with anything I've pulled with my 2WD '03 with 3.73

DRW will pull better, tranny is built slightly which is good because the old trannies just werent good.

Gears shouldnt matter that much. The cummins has the power to pull either one it wants without a problem.

The truck with the built tranny will be the superior tow machine. The auto is the weak link and it's been handled on the 3500. I just recently converted to dual rear wheels and I can say that yes, it tows a lot better, but only when using a bumper pull trailer. When pulling 5th wheel/goose, it's a lot closer. The built tranny gets my vote. If the 2500 were a 5speed, it'd be dead even for the weight you're considering.
JMO.

Oh, I dig the yanmar

I would have to go with the DRW too. But really, since its such a light load, I would drive the truck that gets better MPG. Both trucks would pull that the same IMHO. But yes, drw has better stability, but only if you dont know how to tote around stuff

Get a 3500 DRW with 4.10's if automatic or 3.73's if manual. Just got back from the mountains and my truck did excellent.

I've pulled with both a 2000 2500 with 3:54
And my truck,01 3500 same ratio, never had any problem hauling some
pretty heavy stuff,14k bumper pulls and stuff.....
The 3500 is better if you are going to hit the corners hard and fast, other than that the 2500 is fine,I hauled a 4500lb camper with it and never noticed much more than a smooth ride

I'm a big fan of safety and would bet the dually setup is the safest for you, family, and livestock. Other than that either will pull the trailer just fine.
