i have a few questions
first when you don't have the keys in on a 2004 dodge ram and you step on the brakes does the brake lights come on? Mine don't(now?)
the reason i ask this is i have a problem and i'm trying to get it worked out . I was hooking up a brake controller today but i couldn't get it to work so i unhooked it and i noticed now my 3rd brake light is not working. and it was working before . I checked all of the fuses. I'm a little confused.
when i have the controller hooked up and i push the manual switch, the 3rd brake light and the rear brake lights all work but when i push the brake pedal in the 3rd brake light is dead
any ideas? thanks

its a Hayes , i'm sure i hooked it up right i got the color code off the internet . but i think its not a good unit , because i can take it off the truck and stop on the brake pedal and my 3rd brake light will not work. I thought it might be a fuse but all look good. does anyone have a wiring digram for the new trucks. I think it might be a bad wire ... the white /w brown that goes from the brake stop switch to the trailer brake harness. This is the wire that tell the controller that you are stoping on the brakes. With the controller hooked up i step on the brakes no 3rd brake light. but like i said hit the maunal switch on the controller and the 3rd light works so this tell me that the bulb and wiring to the 3rd light is good but maybe not the wire from the pedal to the controller.
can some tell me about the brake lights on the new dodge , if you go out right now and step on the brakes without the key in do you have rear brake lights?

First thing is does your truck with the TT package
If it did then all you need to do is get the Dodge pigtail that plugs into the blue connector under the dash. If it didn't then you can still use it but will have to run wires for the 12v constant to the 7 pin wire connector and the brake actuvation wire(blue). You will also need to install the 40 amp breaker in the fuse box.

It sounds to me that you cut the brake light switch wire and wired your controller in between the brake switch and the brake light line which goes to the trailer brake lights. Your 3rd brake light is on the rear part of this wiring.
If you cut a brake wire to install this, then the installation is a problem.
To install a controller, you do not cut any wires, you tap to them.
You need the brake switch light wire, (input), and you tap off of it (Do not cut it)
You need a fused 12+ wire, and a ground wire.
Then you need a wire going from the controller to the trailer for the Brakes.
This is SEPARATE from the brake light wire that goes from the brake switch to the trailer brake lights.
The trailer brakes are always a SEPARATE line from the controller unit just to the trailer brakes, there are NEVER any trailer brake lights on this line. The controller units see the resistance of the brakes on this circuit and adjust the stopping accordingly !!! If you put lights on this line, that changes the resistance and would mess up the controllers calculations.
If you do not have enough pins in your trailer/truck plug to put in a separate brake line, then you would need to install a different type plug/socket so you have the appropiate number of pins available !!!!

SuperGewl-- I did not have the TT option on the 2004 I purchased. I hooked up my prodigy and ran the 12v constant and brake wire to the back and everything is working, however I did not place a 40 amp breaker in the fuse panel. Did I miss something?
