Ok I am curious to see what you guys think heavy towing is. I seee a lot of post here with people saying they tow heavy. The weights i see do not seem heavy to me at all. alot of them seem to maybe weigh a little over what my empty trailer weigh or about 2 to 3 k over what my jd skidsteer weighs. It just doesnt seem to be enough weight to even worry about. just wondering what the thoughts and opinions where.

 

Usually when I talk about heavy loads its 10,000+ and up to 20,000 not including the trailer,total gross about 32,000

 

I would say 10k on up is heavy. The largest "heavy load" I did was a 20k boom lift on a 35' 4axle goose for about a mile

 

10 k is a low normal load for me on my trailer. trailer weighs 8k my little skidsteer weighs 9k by its self. so when i see people say their dragging 10k or 12k i just dont think thats heavy. i haul an avg of 15k on the trailer for 100's of miles all the time and i dont have some of the thoughts or questions i see on here, just makes me wonder

 

I haul my backhoe 580Case to and from Deming, NM from my place which is south east of Phoenix, Az on my 32' tandam duel trailer. Its about 235 miles one way. I usually haul it 6-8 times a year. Little slow thru the mountians but it dose alright. I also haul hay about a 100 miles ,usually 200 big three wire bales on my triple axle trailer goose. Car trailers, Stock trailers,Enclosed trailers, it all depends on what I'm Hauling

GVW: Anything over 30,000 lbs for more than 100 miles or so.. I've hauled heavier around town but I wouldn't like to haul that across country.

 

I tow loads of 18-22K pretty regularly. My BP Avion 30' when loaded is about 12K, my CustomFab 32' GN with living quarters hits the highest load towed on a regular basis, right at 24-25K - then add about 8600 for the truck. I've never weighed my 12' GN dump with my Bobcat S220 in it, so ???

I do get what you are saying about guys thinking they tow heavy, but anything right at 10K is NOT heavy. It may seem heavy to them, but certainly not as compared to what many of us drag around.

I am usually at 38K loaded and have scaled 42K a few to many times. But when I am hauling hay on the flatbed I am right at 49-50K but when I load that heavy no public roads are involved.

Needless to say I get real excited when I see Ford enginers testing the 2011 superduty towing 10,000 pounds

 

35k +- a few k gcwr normal load is around 33k ,My toy hauler tips in at 17k that's my light normal load. anything under 10 is not much of a load at all!

 

Thats what i was thinking to CD, i just wanted to see if i was the only one around who's truck actually hauled something heavy

I have never really kept a towing log that looks at total towing mileage, I keep a single log for each trailer that way I can track mileage on the and maintenance, etc - having said that, I totalled up all their miles used since I got my Dodge truck and have towed almost 2/3rds of my odometer total with my truck, right at 35K of towing these kinds of loads with the Dodge. Now I know that amount of mileage is nothing compared to what kind of miles others have towed with their trucks, but I am not commercial and do not haul for a living, so to me it's a good amount for a person who just hauls hay, feeds, building materials, personal use equipment and has a little recreation in less than 4 years of ownership.

anything over half of your mileage is a good amount of towing for the avg person. soon as i get the motor out of the 07 and rebuilt it will probably run bobtail only about 10% of the time so i can give this 06 a rest

 

Keep in mind that hauling 18-20k across the flatlands is way easier than hauling 12-14k on single lane mountain roads with steep grades and switchbacks.

 

I usually consider anything over 30,000# GCW to be "heavy towing".
