Hauling someone else's car

I have a co-worker that is based out of houston in this week. He decided to be cool and drive his 'vette. Sunday night on his way in, it died on the freeway. He can up to 15 minutes worth of driving out of it before it dies again and the car is willing to restart in just as random manners.
Anyway, I offered to haul his car back to Houston, but at the time, I didn't consider the implications of hauling someone elses vehicle. What are the legalities of a 500 mile trip with someone elses property with the property owner in the vehicle with me?

I wouldn't give it a second thought.
Just make him pay for the fuel.

It is not a commercial tow so I do not see where it would be a problem, especially since he will be with you. We do that sort of thing all the time.

Yea, Im not springing for 500 miles each way of fuel so he can have his vette back. Especially since if he comes to get it, he is going to have to drive the rental back to houston, haul it back to return it then haul his vette back. I dont think his hemi is going to drink lightly to do that.

I hauled a friends car to Houston from North Texas a few weeks back. I went to Uhaul to rent a car hauler trailer. If I towed the car and turned the trailer in in Houston it was going to cost about $300 for the trailer rental. If I brought the trailer back to N. Texas it was going to cost like $200. If after I took the trailer to Houston but then turned it in at Conroe it only cost about $100. So, to save my friend money, I chose the latter of the 3 choices. I just thought it was funny that to turn it in Houston it cost so much..........so i was going to bring it back with me empty....but got to checking further and it was cheaper still to go to Conroe and drop it off.

Anyway to answer your question..........i wouldn't think a second thought about it. Except make your friend pay your fuel/rental bills and then buy you dinner.

Maybe before hand you just want to talk about what happens if you get into an accident worse case scenario you total his car. Who is going to pay? His insurance? You pay deductible? He pays deductible? Tell him your insurance will NOT cover his car on your trailer.
