Fuel Costs Changed My Hobbies

WELL,
I gave in to the rising cost of fuel and sold my 03 fiver and the hitch.
I'm not playing that game till trucks run on fuel cells. $240.00 just for
roundtrip fuel for a weekend out of town in the hills, not this camper.
RV site costs have gone way up too, 25 to 35 bucks a night.
One trip a month to me does not justify owning a big RV like a fiver.
And for the cost of two RV trips a month my sweetie and I can fly
to Cozumel every other month like we used too, until airfare rates
go thru the roof too. Then its back to the VW bus and a tent.
Still got the tent. WANTED..55 MPG VW MicroBus ...

OK, on second thought,, I can't go anywhere w/o my truck, so I guess
we will be looking at some "very basic" slide in units. I like the simple
designs that Capri offers. Any other units made like the Capri models.

Thanks....HOUTEX....

I have a Palomino pop-up style cabover. It is fairly well equipped: 3-way fridge, furnace, stove, hot water heater, outside shower. Being that it folds down it doesn't kill the fuel mileage as much as a hard side camper, but it is less convenient if moving the truck frequently (taking the boat to the lake, changing campsites, etc). You can even get them with inside showers and toilets - it all depends on how much you want to spend.

Dan: That looks like a fun truck to tow the Jeep to the trails with. One of these days I may have to look into one of those

Thanks for the complements!

HOUTEX - I haven't pulled it off at the campsite, but it wouldn't be difficult to do as long as you have something to steady it once it's off - the jacks let it move around way too much. Like any camper, it's kind of a pain to load on the truck on an uneven surface, though, and I normally camp in remote areas...no campgrounds for me.

4x4not - That was the exact reason I went with a slide-in. It works perfectly for towing the Jeep to the trails.

I know with the state parks constantly filled and paying $32+ a night for a private camp ground, I can understand. When we were kids (70's / gas crunch days) permanent camping spots were the norm again, repeat?

I agree, I havent driven a car for weeks to work. In a way its like returning back to the simple days, all my travels are on a motorcycle anymore, even camping. Ya never have to worry if you can take this or that cause theres no room for anything, just a sleeping bag and bottle of Jack

We might not go as far or go as often, but we're not even considering selling the RV as it's one of the recreational activities that my wife and I both enjoy.

And yes, I'm riding the motorcycle (BMW K1200GT) to work more than I planned when I bought it. Recreationally, my trip to the Hill Country this weekend will be on the BMW with a BMW club as opposed to in the truck pulling the RV with our RVing group.

i have to admit it has been playing on my off roading/camping pretty hard over the past couple of years. heck the wife and i can ride the bike and get a hotel room cheaper than hauling the trailer. all the wheeling spots we used to go to have been closed or now they charge 20 to 30 bucks a day to wheel which is crazy. then they want money to dry camp on the land you are wheeling.

Come out to Arizona - there is still a ton of "free" wheeling on public lands, and you can primitive camp for free in a lot of areas around the state. Of course, the 100*-plus temps during the summer take the fun out of both.

I briefly thought of buying a bike for the 21-mile trip to work, but flashbacks of a Chevy Impala bumper coming towards my head changed my mind. I got lucky once, but don't want to push it....
