EGT Range

I have a 2005 5.9 TDC 4WD with Pacbrake exhaust brake and a BD cooldown timer. Turning the exhaust brake on increases EGT by 200 or so degrees at idle. I have not tested cruisng by turning EB on and off. I will have to do that to see the effect. I think at higher temps it does not have same effect.

Okay here is a set of real diesel rookie questions:

What should normal EGT be when cruising down the hiway at 70 MPH?

What should EGT be towing 8500# on level terrain doing around 60MPH?

What should EGT be towing 8500# up a 6 or 7% grade doing around 50 - 55MPH on a straight away?

What is the highest safe operating temp for EG?

Thanks for the info in advance.

EGT at 70 mph (600-700F)
EGT at 8500# on level ground at 60 mph (800-900F)
EGT at 8500# up 6 or 7% grade 50-55 mph (1000-1200F)
Highest safe EGT (1400F)

Of course these are estimates, temps will differ depending on your mods ie. exhaust, intake, injector, fueling box.

I usually don't let it get over 1200 degrees. My speed up the grade is controlled by the EGT and water temperature. As for your exhaust brake it is only engaged when your foot is off the pedal. Cruising you will not see any difference with it on or off.

Take Care,

I dont let mine go over 1200* for to long either, but he has a 3rd gen truck. I think they can take a little more heat than us 2nd gen guys. I think most people with 3rd gens start backing off at around 1300-1400 but I'm not sure. Someone will chime in shortly.

I dont know what it is supposed to run at but it aint nothin for mine to peg out at 1500 on the highest hp settin with quad on high. Thats with afe and straight pipe. Dead stop empty then floored, by the time I hits 85-88 its pegged. I can hit 1300 pretty easy empty on 60 horse. Dont know if this helps just givin you a little referance.

I agree, but what I don't understand is that if the EB is on and I park & idle after running at hi-way speeds to let the Turbo spin down and cool down, the EG temp will not fall below 550 or so. As soon as I switch the EB off the temp starts falling and reaches around 275 which is the shut-down temp I have my BD Cooldown timer set to.

Seems the general consensus is that if I keep EGT under 1300 or so, the TDC will stay happy.

Thanks for the help.
