Disconnect Trailer before dropping in?

Quick one for the boat owners - do you disconnect your trailer from the electrical before you drop the boat in the water? I never have and haven't had a problem until I bought a little jet ski. Now, every time I drop the thing in, it blows the right rear light. I guess if water is getting to the bulb, that would explain it, but this is a brand new light unit. Anyway, just checking to see if I'm insane for leaving it plugged in.

Thanks,

I always disconnect before I drop the boat. I found that if I didn't I would blow the trailer bulbs (cold water - hot bulb). I know the trailer lights are supposed to be sealed but I have my doubts.

Its easier to disconnect while unstrapping the boat than replacing a bulb or fuse with the Hi-Po watching.

Fair enough - fair enough. Now, do I have to admit to the little lady that she's right?

My recommendation is to buy LED taillights and you will never again have to replace a bulb.

itsthe hot bulb meets cold water most likely. DC current will still work in water. so it depends on what she said as to why it was blowing out! if she thought it was shorting, then no.

A-HA! Brilliant! This is a win/win ... I don't have to admit that she was right and I get to buy something cool. It's never a bad day when you get to buy something for your toys and circumvent a women's pride. Thanks much Nat. !

A lot depends on your trailer light configuration. I cannot disconnect my trailer before backing into the water because of the back up solenoid in the brake line. Disk brakes work equally well in both directions so I wired the solenoid to energize when the backup lghts come on blocking the flow of fluid to the trailer brakes. I have the Westbarr sealed lights and so far (knock on wood) I haven't blown a single fuse or popped a light.
