Cummins Vs Ford V10
My only experience actually driving a V10 was in a motorhome we rented a few years back.
It performed OK, but it was really screaming/revving to get up to speed. And got poor mpg - around 6MPG going from Vegas to Needles, and that's a pretty flat haul.

I had a 99 F250 V-10 Auto Crew 4x4. It had 4.30 gears. With 315's and a leveling kit I could and did get 12mpg out of it driving 60 mph over a 200 mile round trip EMPTY
Empty is was like a big sports car! Really fun to drive. Put ANYTHING behind or in it that weighed more than 500lbs and it fell completly on its face. And only got 6 mpg doing it.
I really liked that truck. But I hated the motor. I considered a ISB swap but just traded it off.
P.S. I only owned it for a year!!!!!

the really cool thing is that not only can i outrun him pulling a load but when we hit 11k feet going over th 8% grades in colorado i can pass him even unloaded cause his pos will be gasping for oxygen
without a turbo he will be putting out about 30% less power at altitude

We take a v10 dodge too elk camp just for the simplistic fact that we don't need too worry about it getting gelled up. With weeks worth of food 4 horses a camper and a horse trailer of course all our gear right around 10k plus or minus and if you all ever pulled over the blues here in Oregon seems the truck likes 4th gear and about 5 grand
and gets around 2mpg
I took my truck once and i filled up twice too there 4

I've been watching this site for a while, but this is my first post. I love Ford. Always have, always will. I was nervous about buying a Ford diesel so I talked myself into buying a 2006 V10 Lariat with 4.10 gears. Man I loved that truck. That is until the gas bill made it so that I hated to turn the engine on. I got 11 mpg around town, 12 on the freeway, and towing a load of around 9,000 pounds I would get 6.5 mpg. That thing would rev up to 5,000 rpm on a hill. My dad has a 2004 Dodge. He loves his truck. I recently traded my ford for a 2003 Dodge 3500 CTD. I have 4.10 gears, 35" tires and an edge ez. I get 18 mpg on the freeway, 16 around town. I am taking my 5th wheel on a trip this month to get my towing mileage. I am very confident it will beat 6.5 mpg. I thought the V10 pulled really well for a gas engine. Much better than a 460 I used to pull with, but the mileage was horrible, even much worse towing than the 460. I love the Cummins and the look of the Dodge on 35" tires.
I had zero problems with the ford. I just decided if I was going to get a diesel engine there is only one choice, the Cummins.
Mileage figures hand calculated adjusting for tire size.

When I went looking for a diesel, Ford dealers would barely budge from sticker.
Same with the Chevy dealers. I got a great deal from my local Dodge dealer, though.
While the Dodge was my third choice, knowing what I now know, I bought the best truck and made the right decision.

Careful with this one guys. As a former owner of a 250 V10 six speed with 4.30 gears I can speak to both sides of this one. My old Ford was fast and nibble unloaded. My Dodge definetly would take it in a towing test, but straight up unloaded I would put my money on the Ford. They rev high and the V10 really comes alive with the 4.30's. The auto behind the V10 is a dog. Loved the V10 but for what I'm towing now the Dodge is the only way to go. Just my $.02
I agree. I owned a Ford V10 with Kenne Belle Supercharger and 4.10 gears with other goodies. Made for a high rev. Luv'd it, but I have learned that the Cummins is very different beast. I have a lead foot.
I drove an Excursion V10 rental for my bachelor party - yeah that's a long story told elsewhere - and that thing with 8 guys and no luggage in it was an absolute PIG. It wouldn't get out of it's own way. And a whopping 8 mpg to boot.
Found this recent article, V-10 vs. 6.4

I think they fudged the MPG numbers for the 6.4.

my parents and i took a trip in a 2000 v10 F250. that was one of the worst trips we ever took. granted this truck was a test vehicle, and had many miles on it. the trans would just suddenly drop out and act like it was in neutral, it happened so often that my dad stopped pulling over to restart it. he would just shift to neutral and let it coast, and restart. not to mention it blew every spare fuse in the truck, plus an entire box that we bought at the store. then on the way back, we had an non-engine related problem, every time we would stop at a stop light the dome light would come on. that was the last trip we took in that truck.
