I have seen this 2 times. Guy backs up to a very large 5th wheel , Hooks up trailer and pulls out without the hitch locked and the jacks up. When the trailer lands on top of the bed rails it makes a very large dent on both sides and it's new bed time. It must happen alot. They make an after market part that attaches to your hitch to catch the trailer if this happens.

Operator error, pure and simple. That's why one always does a "bump check" or "pull test" before unchocking and retracting the front jacks.

Yet by the time it gets to the "Open Roads Forum" it's, "my Reese hitch failed and did $1800 worth of damage to my truck...

I used to tow a lot of heavy stuff with my Isuzu P'up diesel. Always used the chains, good ball, tires and equipment. Never had a mishap. Can't say the same for the blokes towing the Bobcat that killed the Ace Hardware truck driver...

I watched a junk trailer bounce off of a tow truck's ball once and crashed into the side of a parked Volvo station wagon. The lady had just a few moments before plucked her little girl out of the back seat. That could have been ugly.
One time a big 22" truck wheel and tire came off of a truck, bounced across an intersection just missing my wife's car and off into the woods. That would have possibly killed her. You never know when it could happen.
