brake controller problem

I had the brake controller short out in my truck the other night and blew a whole bunch of non related fuses in the truck and burnt the ground wire up in going from the plug to the firewall. It's a Tekonsha brand named Voyager. You would think it would just pop a fuse but it blew the 140 amp alternator fuse, the dash and radio fuse and the ecm,pcm fuse. Luckily after checking everything out and fixing the ground wire everything works.
I'm getting a different brake controller and this ones getting a inline fuse put on the hot and ground wire. If I had been out on the road when this happened I would have been Screwed big time. Amazing how something simple can cause so much trouble.

I had a hobbs do that to a 99 f250 super duty, but it shorted out all the gauges too and some other things to the tune of $1900 it should not of done that but it did. something was up a few weeks before because all the lights would come on in the middle of the night and I could not find what was doing it until everything burned up!

I'm putting fuses on both my trucks. A simple 20 or 30 amp fuse could save lots of problems, that's the reason I put this on here. Maybe it will save someone some time and money. I've had brake controllers on all my trucks and this is the first time I've had a controller do this.

If you're looking for a brake controller, can I suggest a Maxbrake? I don't work for them or get any cash, but boy, true proportional braking rocks. I tow 2-3 times a week and after having a pod controller, I cannot say enough good things about it.

Just my over rated .02.

Did you find the root cause?
Did you have a trailer connected at the time?

All we can figure out is the controller shorted to ground inside. It's one that senses the trailer on it by resistence and has a light on when it has a trailer hooked to it. No trailer hooked when this happened. The ground wire on the truck side of the harness was the lightest wire in the harness so it took the brunt of the heat.
