Brake controller installation?

I am new to trailering, but I am confused about how everything comes together and works when hooking up the brake controller. I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins with a factory intalled 7 pin plug. I have decided to purchase the Prodigy 90185 with the Dodge wiring harness that will plug right into the existing harness under the dash(as I understand). I am buying a flatbed gooseneck trailer, and everyone that I have seen so far have a six pin round plug which obviously will not work with the factory installed 7 pin plug. After I install the prodigy to the existing wiring harness, what is the rest of the scenario to get everything to work(lights, brake lights and brakes)? Is it as simple as changing the plug on the trailer perhaps? Or is there an adapter that I can buy, and if so where? If not, how do I know which wire from the trailer goes where in the new plug. I did take your guys advise and buy a B&W hitch over a Una Goose that I was looking at. Thanks for all the help.

I can't be much help, but you can get a 7 pin/6 pin adapter at Wal-Mart, K-Mart or just about any auto parts store, NAPA, etc.

Aardvark,

Welcome to the forum - - good bunch of guys on here that will be glad to help.

You just about answered your own questions as borne out by Bearfoot. Just plug that little old controller in, get an adapter, check out the lights, adjust the controller and go find something to tow. It is pretty easy.

You might want to consider the Jordan Ultima controller. Prodigy is good, but those of us who have tried the Jordan after using the Prodigy have never looked back. You might do a search for some of the threads on the subject. It is definitely the smoothest controller I have ever used.

Good luck, and again, welcome
