brake controller going bad?

I have a tekonsha voyager (sp?) and wonder if it is going bad. While towing, either a flatbed goose neck or bumper pull stock trailer I get a surging or pulse that feels just like the brakes are being applied on the trailer. This controller was revently moved from one truck to another and the problem continues. If I run the trailer without plugging it in it is fine.

Do I not have it adjusted correctly or is there a way to test them?

It is only about 3 yrs old and have only towed these two trailers around town.

thanks,

Roy

Roy,
Do yourself a favor and go buy a Jordan Ultima. Sweetest, smoothest controller you have ever used.

Re:brake controller going bad?

The controller itself is probably not going bad. There are all kinds of things that can make them not work properly. It may not be adjusted properly, could have a bad ground, could not be getting 12volts all the time. I think the voyager's got a single light on top that goes from green to red? If so, it should be green until you press the brakes and then it should go to orange or red, depending on how aggressive you want it set. I think your supposed to set the level dial first (the one on the left) and then the other dial, but I forgot how to do that and would just make sure it was green without the brakes on and red with. I had one that the power wire shorted out on the body, and it would stay red all the time. There are better controllers out there if you want to get a new one. The Jordan and tekonsha prodigy are good controllers.

Re:brake controller going bad?

thanks guys, I tried adjusting it several times but it didn't seem to correct it. I had thought about bad ground etc but since I just moved it from one truck to the other it didn't seem likely.

Guess I'll live with it until I can justify a new one. I really don't tow that often and it is only into town and back when I do.
